Position Overview

New Ecology, Inc. is seeking a candidate for the position of Mechanical/Technical Assistant (Intern) in its Boston home office. The work is available full-time (up to 40 hours per week) between Tuesday, September 4 and Friday, December 14, 2018.

Schedule: 

  • Ideally, the Mechanical/Technical Assistant will be available for 40 hours per week over a 12 consecutive week duration between September 4th and December 14th, 2018.
  • A minimum of 32 hours per week could be considered.
  • The position will report to NEI’s downtown Boston “main” office. 

Responsibilities

NEI will have a team working to install new remote monitoring systems and complete recommended heating and hot water equipment repairs and upgrades to multiple sites in Massachusetts. The intern will work under the oversight of the Director of Product and Service Development and will be directly supervised by, and will collaborate extensively with, the technical team.

Specific tasks may include assisting NEI staff in the following ways:

  • Receiving, unpacking and shelving purchased components;
  • Entering components received, and assembled systems, into computerized inventory database;
  • Assembling component parts into a system, conducting quality control tests and documentation thereof;
  • Executing equipment installations as part of a team in the field (frequent travel within MA);
  • Assisting in implementation of identified Energy Conservation Measures, and documenting these efforts;
  • Executing assorted repairs of issues identified by NEI staff as part of a team.

Qualifications

The position requires meticulous attention to detail and documentation; the work will be supervised and undergo quality control checks. Candidates must have mechanical and technical work experience, including working with their hands. Candidates with engineering or HVAC experience preferred.

The applicant’s experience and qualifications should include:

  • Evidence of technical competence through education and experience;
  • Use of hand and power tools;
  • Ability to follow procedures and satisfy documentation requirements;
  • Ability to effectively understand and communicate in English;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to learn new things;
  • Interest in energy efficiency and sustainability;
  • Experience or familiarity with HVAC or similar equipment.
