~ As a national leader in freshwater conservation, Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute (TNACI) guides initiatives to research and renew the Southeast’s most sensitive rivers and streams. ~

Our science is aimed at understanding what animals live here and why, as well as building knowledge around how a changing environment affects our ecosystems.

Position Overview

Our Watershed Coordinator will advance the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute freshwater conservation science mission by teaching conservation partners, local landowners, citizen scientists, science teachers, and river enthusiasts to be watershed advocates and stewards.

They will implement partnerships with land trusts and landowners to enhance knowledge and protection of southeastern freshwater life through riparian improvements, and develop relationships with other educational and conservation organizations in the region to improve freshwater literacy across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implements partnerships with land trusts and landowners in high priority watersheds to improve freshwater management on protected lands or along riparian corridors.
  • Compiles and shares information about land use practices and ways to protect freshwater health.
  • Conducts professional development for K-12 educators on watershed science, such as the weeklong River Teachers summer program.
  • Expands citizen science outreach in water quality monitoring through programs such as Georgia Adopt-A-Stream workshops or Project WET trainings.
  • Assists conservation science team with offering programs for scientists and graduate students on outreach and communication techniques.
  • Evaluates the success of education programs in reaching priorities and adjusts as needed.
  • Assists in delivering educational programs, including at our facilities and in outreach venues that teach watershed conservation and aquatic ecology to teens and adults.
  • Works with Tennessee Aquarium Education Department staff to place freshwater conservation messages in ongoing educational programs.
  • Develops education programs for river enthusiasts, such as rafting or fly fishing guides.
  • Interfaces with conservation partners including university professors, government agency personnel, and other non-profit organizations to maximize outreach and educational opportunities in Aquarium and Conservation Institute facilities.

Qualifications

Key Requirements:

  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of freshwater conservation issues.
  • Knowledge of informal learning techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, especially farmers.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors of Education or Science
  • Outdoor recreation or land stewardship experience preferred
  • Certification in Project WET, Project WILD, or Georgia Adopt-A-Stream preferred
  • GIS experience preferred
