Clean Fuel Experts for Assessment of GHG Validation & Verification Bodies

About the ANAB Accreditation Program:

ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) is the largest accreditation body in North America and provides services in more than 75 countries. Within the clean and low-carbon fuel space, ANAB accredits bodies who perform  verification of credits (representing one tonne of CO2e) created from multiple compliance pathways including but not limited to 1) projects that reduce emissions from fossil fuels (e.g. carbon capture and storage), 2) the supply of low-carbon fuels (e.g. ethanol, biodiesel), and 3) supply of fuel or energy to advanced vehicle technology (e.g. electric vehicles). 

ANAB accredits VVBs to the accreditation criteria contained in ISO 14065, Environmental Information – General principles and requirements for bodies validating and verifying environmental information. Additionally, ANAB partners with programs and regulatory bodies that have set requirements to transition economies and sectors to cleaner more sustainable fuels such as Environment and Climate Change Canada and ICAO CORSIA. 

Function of ANAB Assessors and Technical Experts 

ANAB assessment teams evaluate the process of validation and/or verification against ISO 14065, ISO 14064-3 as well as GHG program requirements. This includes evaluating the verification process through ANAB assessments. The assessment process includes documentation review, onsite assessments, and witness assessments of verification bodies. Key activities to be evaluated include, but are not limited to, pre-engagement and planning, team assembly, verification team competence, execution of verification activities (may include site visits), independent review, and issuance of the report and opinion.

Available Roles:

Lead Assessor: Person qualified with respect to ANAB requirements to perform accreditation assessments with respect to ISO 14065 and who is responsible for leading a team of assessors during the assessment of a validation/verification (VV) body and who reports the findings to ANAB.

Technical Assessor: An individual who is generally accepted by peers as being competent in a specific subject area(s) and qualified by ANAB as expert in accordance with specific requirements.

Technical Expert: Person who provides specific knowledge or expertise to the ANAB assessment team relating to the process or activity to be assessed, or language, local conditions or culture. A technical expert does not make accreditation recommendations or raise findings. They follow instructions given by the ANAB Lead Assessor or Technical Assessor and report back their observations.  A local expert would possess knowledge and experience of a particular domain at the local level. 

Knowledge and Skills

ANAB’s ideal Assessor and Technical Expert candidates will bring a combination of knowledge, skills, and experience:

• Undergraduate degree in relevant field (e.g. Chemical engineering, Forestry, Ecology, Biology, Geology, Economics).
• Knowledge of agricultural systems and practices or carbon cycles in ecosystems.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, biofuel production processes, renewable energy, life-cycle analysis, and techno-economic modeling.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or development of tools for decision-making by interested parties.
• Experience in low-carbon fuels, hydrogen, and/or adjacent industries.
• Experience in carbon abatement and other variable of climate transition including waste, water and circularity.
• Experience in field data collection and processing.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, clean vehicle infrastructure technology and deployment.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, clean vehicle policy and standards.
• Experience with auditing, inspection, or certification related to sustainable forestry or agricultural programs.
• Experience in qualitative and quantitative analysis to support decision-making.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, sustainable livelihood practices.
• Familiarity and understanding of GPS coordinates.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of understanding of GHG assertions and the validation/verification process.
• Knowledge of quality management systems.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, oil and gas facility design and operating practices.
• Metering, measurement, and monitoring of emission in the oil and gas sector.
• Identification of baseline conditions for oil and gas offset projects
• Knowledge of, or experience in oil and gas sector methodologies such as underbalance drilling, gas recovery, retrofit of high-bleed pneumatic controllers with low-bleed options, enhanced oil recovery, and other industry protocols.  

Time Commitment:

This is a part time contractual position. ANAB estimates approximately one week of preparation time in addition to approximately 3 – 5 days per assessment. As training is required, a long-term commitment is ideal.
