Environmental Science and Policy is the investigation and body of knowledge related to the dynamic interactions between people and natural systems.

At SOU, the Environmental Science and Policy program provides the opportunity to develop an understanding of the complexity of natural systems, natural resource use and sustainability enabling students to appreciate and solve dynamic environmental issues.

In the Environmental Science and Policy program, students will research and address such global issues as climate change, water resource management, energy use, sustainable development, and the conservation of biodiversity.

Position Overview

Southern Oregon University invites applications for a position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Environmental Science & Policy.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will teach upper-division courses in the earth systems sciences, to potentially include hydrology, geomorphology, soil science, climate change, and/or environmental geology
  • The candidate will also contribute to introductory environmental science courses in the physical sciences
  • The successful candidate may also teach upper-division research methods courses including GIS and Data Analysis courses
  • Proven teaching ability and demonstrable research activity are essential
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching, student advising, and continued scholarly practice
  • The candidate should demonstrate competency in environmental sciences broadly with specific interest in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, soil science, hydroclimatology, and/or ecohydrology
  • Candidates should show excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and management experience, demonstrable applied field research, and capacity for undergraduate research/program advising

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Environmental Studies/Sciences, Geology, Hydrology, Earth Science, or related discipline at the time of appointment from a university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Ability to teach lower-division physical sciences as well as upper-division earth systems science courses in geology and hydrology
  • Demonstrated maintenance of an active scholarly research program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Desktop and either Erdas or ENVI
  • Ability to support courses in GIS, Remote Sensing, and Data Analysis at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Scholarly research experience in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, ecohydrology, hydroclimatology, and/or soil science

Physical Demands:

  • Regular teaching activities, including standing, sitting,and lecturing
  • This position is designated as a critical, security-sensitive or safety-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check
