~ Somerset Wildlife Trust (formally known as The Somerset Trust for Nature Conservation) was formed in 1964 by a group of individuals who recognised the desperate need to take action to secure the future of wildlife in our wonderful and diverse County. ~

From an original 15 members who joined, paying £1 each at the inaugural meeting, the Trust has grown to be Somerset’s leading environmental charity with over 18,000 members. This has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of the Trust’s members and volunteers.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Trust and they have helped transform the organisation into being a vital and influential charity which now owns and manages 1700 acres of nature reserves, 9 area groups, many specialist and practical conservation groups. Hundreds of volunteers now work in support of the Trust.

Assistant Ecologist / Ecologist with First Ecology:

The role involves supporting the delivery of a wide range of ecological consultancy projects across the UK with an opportunity to develop a chosen specialism and gain relevant protected species licenses. 

Qualifications

Personal specification:

  • The role requires a polite, confident, organized and reliable, team player
  • The appointed person will also be hardworking, a fast and enthusiastic learner, independent and self-reliant and continuously aiming to increase their knowledge and perfect their skills
  • Commercial awareness is advantageous

Knowledge and experience:

  • At least one degree in a relevant discipline
  • Full UK driving licence with vehicle insured for work purposes
  • Knowledge and experience of habitat assessments and protected species surveys
  • Knowledge of relevant UK and EU wildlife legislation and an understanding of planning policy in relation to ecology
  • Excellent verbal and report writing skills
  • Competent in the use of Word, Excel, Outlook
  • A member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or capable of membership
