Green Seal Restaurant Standard Approved by ANSI

Restaurants looking to differentiate their eco-friendly practices have a new certification option.

Green Seal Inc. announced that its Green Seal Environmental Standard for Restaurants and Food Services, GS-46, has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

First published in May 2009, GS-46 measures the environmental impacts of restaurants and food services including the impacts of food, energy and water use, and supplies.

The standard was developed with input from more than 100 stakeholders including industry trade groups, operators, suppliers, academia and environmental and health organizations.

In addition to its ANSI accreditation, Green Seal follows ISO 14024 guidelines in developing environmental standards and certifying products.

Green Seal standards also comply with the Global Ecolabelling Criteria.

Green Seal, a non-profit based in Washington D.C., has been identifying consumer and institutional products and services that protect the environment and human health since 1989. Green Seal has developed over 40 standards and certified more than 3,300 products and services.

ANSI is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance U.S. global competitiveness and the American quality of life by promoting, facilitating, and safeguarding the integrity of the voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system.
