University of California/ San Diego Getting to 3 MW of Solar

The University of California, San Diego is getting a big solar lift, with close to a megawatt of solar about to be installed on many campus buildings.

Sullivan Solar Power has a contract to install .78 MW of solar, which will bring the university’s total to 3 MW.

Solar will grace the roofs of the Biomedical Sciences Library; the Biomedical Science Building; the Bioengineering Building; the Central Utility Plant; the Leichtag Biomedical Research Building; Mayer Hall; and the San Diego Supercomputer Center.

That will save the university $2 million in energy bills over the next 20 years, cut carbon emissions by 3 million pounds a year and support the local and national economy.

California-based SunPower will supply the 2000 solar panels, and the inverters will be made in Oregon, and racking materials will be specified from manufacturers in the US.

Besides solar and fuel cells, the campus runs on a natural-gas-fired cogeneration plant. It plans to be carbon neutral by 2025.

All new housing built on campus is outfitted with solar. A green roof on a LEED-Platinum dormitory is the first of its kind for the state’s university system.
