Horticulture Assistant

The Park District is dedicated to conservation, education and recreation. It offers an array of facilities and opportunities from picnicking, golfing, swimming, hiking, tobogganing, cross country skiing, trails of all kinds, fishing, winter recreation areas, wildlife areas, outdoor education, a wide variety of special events and programs, and much more await visitors to Cleveland Metroparks.

Position Overview

The Horticulture Assistant is required to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled jobs in maintaining plant collections, both indoor and outdoor. Position requires knowledge ornamental horticulture, plant identification skills, and experience operating small landscape equipment.

Work Schedule: Up to 40 hours per week. Shift starts at 6 a.m. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekdays, weekends and holidays. Days are variable.

Responsibilities

• Assists in planting trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals
• Landscape maintenance as needed or assigned, including mowing, weeding, pruning, spring cleanup, edging, mulching, pruning, and fall cleanup
• Assists with landscape construction projects, including building of retaining walls, paver installation, grading, drainage work, and irrigation installation
• Operate water truck and pump
• Properly prunes indoor and outdoor ornamental plant specimens
• Supports the Zoo's animal browse supplemental feeding program
• Assists in housekeeping tasks
• Actively participates in related training
• Carries out duties and responsibilities in safe and efficient manner to maintain safe work environment. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action, and promptly notifies supervisory personnel

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Physical capacity to perform outdoor labor and normal duties. Willing to work in all weather conditions and able to work on steep inclines
• Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment including: automatic vehicles, small landscape equipment including: rototiller, string trimmer, bed edger, gas powered shears, and backpack blower, sprayers, pumps, and irrigation equipment, mower
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must possess a valid driver's license under the Laws of the State of Ohio

• Manual and automatic vehicles
• Small landscape equipment including: rototiller, string trimmer, bed edger, gas powered shears, and backpack blower
• Sprayers, pumps, and irrigation equipment
• Mower

Compensation: $8.50 per hour
