~ Amazon Watch is a dynamic nonprofit organization working to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. ~

We work directly with frontline indigenous communities and organizations as part of the international climate justice movement. Many of our allies in Brazil are currently suffering from climate change related catastrophes and from the onslaught of extreme far-right Bolsonaro regime and its international financial backers profiting from Amazon destruction.

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate professional to serve as our Brazil Campaigner. The Brazil Campaigner coordinates activities related to Amazon Watch campaigns and program work to defend the rainforest and advance indigenous rights.

The Brazil Campaigner is responsible for coordinating various elements of Amazon Watch’s Brazil campaign in close coordination with the Program Director including maintaining close contact with grassroots partners and NGO allies, mobilizing grassroots action, engaging with companies, shareholders, and the media.

The Brazil Campaigner’s duties also include developing and deploying campaign strategies, representing Amazon Watch in large coalitions (e.g. deliver “outsider” strategies), and networking and relationship-building with potential shareholder, business, government and media allies.

Note: This is a full-time position based in our Oakland, CA headquarters.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Implements a targeted grassroots and corporate strategy to advance Amazon Watch’s campaigns, including organizing protests and direct actions, engaging with companies and shareholders, and acting as a campaign spokesperson
  • Incentivizes coalition-building in collaboration with key allies within the US, South America and elsewhere
  • Liaises regularly with Brazilian grassroots and institutional partners
  • Organizes delegations of indigenous leaders internationally and assists in accompanying those leaders
  • Regularly produces content for Amazon Watch’s blog Eye on the Amazon; contributes to press releases, reports, and in-depth issue briefs
  • Produces or assists in the production of multimedia such as videos, powerpoint presentations, mapping projects, etc.
  • Cultivates relationships with media outlets to amplify the voices of Amazon Watch’s partners and advance AW campaigns
  • Manages and mentors interns and volunteers
  • Participates in national and international meetings and conferences
  • Writes occasional partner support proposals; assists with grant proposals and grant reports
  • Convenes and collaborates with other Amazon Watch staff and allies doing related advocacy and organizing work on various campaigns

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • 3-5 years in environmental, climate justice, human rights, and/or corporate accountability campaigns
  • Grassroots organizing experience, particularly in the U.S. for local and international campaigns
  • Proven ability to design and implement effective campaign strategies to achieve environmental, climate justice or human rights goals
  • Fluency in Portuguese and English (Spanish and French are a plus)
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills, particularly as this relates to communicating with grassroots and shareholder allies, corporate engagement, and the media
  • Highly self-motivated, organized and visionary
  • Skilled at balancing long-term vision and daily responsibilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to manage basic budgets and accounting
  • Heart, humility and humor

Highly Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience with corporate campaigns and shareholder activism
  • Experience working with indigenous peoples and organizations
  • Experience working with frontline communities
  • Previous translation and interpretation experience
  • Experience collaborating with organizations from the global south
  • Strong research skills
  • Familiarity with the workings of international financial institutions and indigenous peoples’ rights
  • Experience in the Amazon region, especially in Brazil
  • Experience with online organizing and social media

  • Salary  is commensurate with experience.
