Description

~ The Rivanna Conservation Alliance (RCA) was founded in 2016 when the Rivanna Conservation Society, an organization that advocated for the health and protection of the Rivanna River for over twenty-five years, merged with StreamWatch, a local nonprofit focused on rigorous monitoring of the water quality of the Rivanna River and its tributaries. ~

With its stewardship history and focus on the Rivanna, RCA holds a unique place in the watershed. In this role, RCA implements an array of programs to engage local communities and governments in understanding and connecting with the river.

Through all seasons, RCA advocates for the conservation of the river and aids in its preservation and restoration with the end goal of achieving its vision of a healthy, thriving community that values its rivers and streams. With the help of dedicated staff and numerous volunteers, RCA is the only nonprofit in Virginia to have achieved Level III certification for both bacteria and benthic monitoring programs.

The Rivanna watershed is one of the most thoroughly monitored watersheds in the Commonwealth. The resulting data is used to inform local and state policy regarding the management of local waterways.

RCA education and recreation programs in the community and local schools help a new generation connect with and value the river. At RCA’s Scheier Natural Area, a 100-acre preserve with ponds and trails for hiking, environmental education partners conduct seasonal workshops.
