Position Overview
The Environmental Compliance Specialist is an entry level field inspector in the Asbestos Division, of the Air and Radiation Management Administration, at the Maryland Department of the Environment in Baltimore.
The work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Flexibility is required for some evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
- The main purpose of the position is to ensure compliance with COMAR 26.11.21, Control of Asbestos, throughout the State.
- The employee, after training, conducts consultations, negotiations, inspections, and investigations at sites regulated for asbestos to ensure compliance and enforcement of environmental laws and regulations pertaining to asbestos control.
- S/he will visit an average of 20 regulated asbestos sites per month.
- These assigned duties will require the operation of the employee’s personal motor vehicle. Employees will be reimbursed for mileage expenses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in earth science, environmental science, geology, biology, chemistry or other related discipline is required.
- Knowledge of State environmental law and regulations.
- Ability to determine whether asbestos projects are being conducted in accordance with the applicable regulations, and halt operations when determines that flagrant violations or unsafe activities have occurred.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
- Ability to use ARMA equipment, including Powered Air Purifying Respirator, Asbestos Sampling kit, etc.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local health officials, asbestos staff, licensed asbestos contractors, general contractors, facility owners and managers, Division Chief, EPA Region lll, DHMH Air Quality Laboratory Personnel, and the general public.
- Ability to work safely at offsite locations, using the appropriated protective equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more.
Compensation: $37,884.00 - USD
