~ The Center for Ecoliteracy has a long history of providing educational materials for students in K-12 and for educators to provide lessons, articles, and principles to further ecological teaching and learning. ~

The Center for Ecoliteracy promotes ecological education. We recognize that students need to experience and understand how nature sustains life and how to live accordingly. We encourage schools to teach and model sustainable practices. The Center leads systems change initiatives, publishes original books and resources, facilitates conferences, and professional development.

Position Overview

The Centers seeks to retain the services of a qualified consultant to develop 6 lesson plans that align with California science and social science standards. Working with educators and experts, CEL will design innovative and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for third- through fifth-grade students. The lessons will focus on six specialty crops: asparagus, carrots, grapes, strawberries, peppers, and tomatoes.

The conceptual foundation of the lessons will be based on CEL's "Big Ideas: Linking Food, Culture, Health, and the Environment." The proposer will assist to develop, write, and edit the lesson plans under the supervision of the Center for Ecoliteracy Executive Director.

The complete set of 6 lesson plans will be completed May 15 – August 31, 2017.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the planning, development, implementation, and revision of curriculum in keeping with best practices
  • Establish project objectives, scope, high-level timelines and project milestones
  • Review and give input on drafts of project planning documents
  • Conduct research and consult with key collaborators for curriculum development purposes
  • Develop learning objectives and goals for each new curriculum and review learning objective for existing curriculum
  • Ensure executive director is informed of any problems related to curriculum content, identify issues and assist with developing strategies to solve issues
  • Write engaging lessons, with an emphasis on hands-on and project-based activities
  • Create user-friendly teacher guides

Qualifications

To qualify for award of this Agreement, Proposers must have:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in curriculum development
  • Masters degree in Education
  • Working knowledge of Common Core and other California and national education standards
  • Knowledge of California agriculture, especially specialty crops
  • Demonstrated familiarity with developmental stages of child development
  • Demonstrated experience in writing teacher guides
  • Strong research and analysis skills using various methods including databases, internet, survey/evaluation tools, library and university reference materials
  • Ability to prepare and provide clear, concise, and complete verbal and written information at a level appropriate to the audience
  • Familiarity with issues pertaining to copyright regulations in curriculum
  • Experience teaching science to elementary or middle school students preferred
  • Self motivated with the demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative
  • Experience working in collaborative teams to achieve desired outcomes
  • Knowledge of 21st century skills for students

This project is funded by the California Department of Food and Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant. All hours worked and expenditures will comply with the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program requirement that grant funds solely enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops.
