~ The Abolitionist Law Center is a public interest law firm inspired by the struggle of political and politicized prisoners, and organized for the purpose of abolishing class and race based mass incarceration in the United States. ~  

Position Overview

The Abolitionist Law Center, a non-profit organization, is now hiring for a part-time (20 hours per week) position for Program Coordinator for our Health and Environmental Rights Docket. This is a 6-month position (July - December 2016) and is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 

Responsibilities  

Responsibilities include: 

  • Assistance in organizing and administering a program to recruit, train, and facilitate pro bono legal representation of Pennsylvania prisoners in need of hepatitis C treatment
  • Organizing and working with ALC attorneys to prepare legal training events
  • Organizing community public education events
  • Reviewing and answering prisoner correspondence
  • Research, review documents, and communication with clients for our Health and Environmental Rights Docket
  • Organizing and scanning records
  • Answering phone and email, maintaining contact lists
  • Social media and website tasks
  • Proofreading, editing, and fact-checking documents 

Qualifications 

Required: 

  • Commitment to the mission and principles of the Abolitionist Law Center
  • Communications skills: Applicants should have strong writing and editing skills, excellent research skills, and the ability to concisely summarize their research in internal memoranda. Applicant should also be comfortable speaking publicly and conducting meetings. Aptitude with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat software is required
  • Live in or willing to relocate to Pittsburgh
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule 

Desired: 

  • Experience with prisons, legal system, social movements
  • Prior editing experience
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
