Description

~ The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) mission is to preserve, enhance, restore and conserve Vermont's natural resources and protect human health for the benefit of this and future generations. ~

The DEC, along with the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and the Dept. of Forests, Parks and Recreation, is part of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.

Through its programs, the DEC manages water and air quality; regulates solid and hazardous wastes; and administers a number of voluntary pollution and waste reduction programs. While the DEC issues most of the state's environmental permits, the department does more than just set forth regulations and assure compliance.

Among other responsibilities, department staff members collect data; conduct research; run volunteer programs; develop educational and outreach materials and programs; administer grants; and work with conservation organizations and state and federal agencies to examine critical environmental issues.

Position Overview

This position is in the Air Permitting & Engineering Section of the Air Quality & Climate Division within the Department of Environmental Conservation. The primary job responsibility entails technical review and analysis of air pollution permit applications from a variety of industrial sources, identifying and quantifying the associated emissions, and writing technical review documents and permits for those sources.

This professional level position provides expert opinion, advice and training to Department management, staff, outside parties and the public as well as participates in staff training and representation of the state in public meetings.

This Limited Service position, (Environmental Engineer IV, Job Opening # 616493), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This positon runs through 9/30/2016. 

Responsibilities

  • Engineering work at an advanced professional level for the Department of Environmental Conservation.
  • Duties involve complex tasks in the technical review and analysis of environmental policies, programs, activities and data in a variety of regulatory, non-regulatory, and engineering programs.
  • Duties entail the collection and analysis of engineering data, evaluation of conceptual engineering plans and the preparation and evaluation of engineering design and construction plans and specifications.
  • Work involves considerable independence in completing work assignments and greater responsibility and accountability than lower level engineer work.
  • May provide project or program oversight and/or supervise program staff or provide expertise in a specialized engineering or program element, which is not duplicated in the Department.
  • Work is performed under the general direction of a higher-level technical or administrative superior.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental, sanitary, chemical, water resources, civil or mechanical engineering.
  • Experience: 4 years of professional experience in environmental, sanitary, water resources, chemical, civil or air pollution engineering.

OR

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in any field of engineering.
  • Experience: 5 years professional experience in environmental, sanitary, water resources, civil or air pollution engineering.

Please note

  • Graduate level coursework in environmental, sanitary, water resources, chemical, civil or air pollution engineering may be substituted for up to 2 years of the experience requirement on a semester for 6 months basis.

OR

  • Experience: 2 years as an Environmental Engineer III.
