~ The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is dedicated to research and education to advance understanding of the ocean and its interaction with the Earth system, and to communicating this understanding for the benefit of society. ~ 

Position Overview 

The Biology Department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently seeking a Research Assistant I to join their team. This is a regular full-time position and is eligible for benefits.

Under close supervision, this individual will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the Institution's zebrafish (Danio rerio) research facility. Excellent communication and organizational skills, and ability to work effectively and productively are required. The successful candidate needs to work as part of a team and be able to coordinate effectively with the zebrafish facility users. This is a Woods Hole, land-based position.

Responsibilities 

Major Duties: 

  • Perform all necessary tasks to keep the fish in good health. Including, but not limited to: general zebrafish husbandry and maintenance, feeding zebrafish and killifish, maintenance and breeding of various mutant and transgenic fish lines, overseeing the operation and upkeep of the facility, raising live feed (artemia and rotifers), cleaning tanks, preparing water, and maintaining water quality.
  • Recordkeeping.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including some weekends to accommodate facility needs.

Qualifications 

Desired Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree in related field plus one year related experience, or High School Diploma or equivalent plus three year's related experience.
  • Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to the ability to lift a maximum of 10 lbs independently knee to floor, shoulder to knee, and above the shoulder; ability to carry up to 50 lbs; visual ability to include depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish basic colors; and ability to hear and interpret instructions in a noisy environment. Frequent prolonged standing/walking; manual dexterity and mobility; use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation and fine manipulation; and occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
