Position Overview

Ecology and Environment, Inc. is a fully integrated environmental consulting firm who is committed to sustainable development through responsible environmental stewardship. We are seeking a temporary (on-call) Avian Specialist/Biologist (reporting to our Buffalo, NY office) to work on avian surveys at a proposed wind energy project and other sites in central and western New York.

This position will be responsible for performing bird surveys using a range of bird sampling techniques including visual/auditory identification. Our successful candidate must have a good understanding of avian surveys and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Performing bird surveys using a range of bird sampling techniques including visual/auditory identification
• Migratory raptor surveys
• Eagle surveys
• Migratory songbird surveys
• Breeding bird surveys
• Data compilation and report writing

Qualifications

• BS in Biology, Environmental Science or a closely related field preferred but not required
• 1-3 years' field experience conducting avian surveys
• Strong visual/auditory bird identification skills (must be able to identify birds by their call/songs)
• Experience conducting raptor surveys, point count surveys and other migratory surveys
• Familiarity with regional avian populations and survey protocol
• Ability to travel and perform field work
• Strong communication skills and ability to work within a team setting as well as a self-starting individual
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Ability to travel to field locations in central and western New York
