~ Founded in 1962, Arthur Morgan School (AMS) is a progressive boarding and day school for girls and boys in grades 7, 8 & 9 ~
AMS is located on 100 acres of farm and wilderness in the Celo Community, about an hour north of Asheville, North Carolina. Students and staff learn together by living together in a safe and supporting environment-sharing work, play, study, and decision-making. Students learn to question, evaluate, think creatively and work cooperatively while participating in a community that shares the Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, stewardship and nonviolent conflict resolution.
Position Overview
AMS is seeking a Garden/Farm Intern for the summer of 2014. Our unique boarding and day school will not be in session during the internship.
Responsibilities
The intern(s) will work with the school's Farm and Garden Coordinators, farming an acre of organic vegetables;
Caring for chickens, turkeys, a milk cow, and sheep and working on the school's grounds;
Principle responsibilities also include weeding, mowing, harvesting, planting, preserving food, milking and caring for animals; and
The intern(s) would also have opportunities to participate in an informal intern exchange with two other nearby farms.
Additionally:
- The school hosts a 2 week-long summer camp for kids 12-14. The intern(s) will be working with the campers on the farm each morning during this period; and
- Throughout the summer, the intern(s) will be expected to become comfortable enough to manage the farm for a total of 1-2 weeks while the Garden Coordinator is gone.
Qualifications
- Some experience is desired;
- Enthusiasm and willingness to learn; and
- Ability to work independently and to work hard outdoors is a must.
Compensation: $100+/month plus rustic room and simple provisions.
