Civic
Works' Real Food Farm is a six-acre urban farm providing fresh, nutritious
produce to Northeast Baltimore's communities. In
addition to producing a variety of produce for sale at our mobile market,
farmers' markets, and restaurants, we welcome school groups from across the Baltimore region for hands-on learning during our field
trips, internships, and service learning opportunities.  We also host workshops and educational
programs related to farming to support those of all ages interested in urban
farming and the food system.
 

Position Overview

Summer
Urban Production Interns will help with all aspects of Real Food Farm's
production, including weeding, harvesting, washing, facilitating CSA
distribution, greenhouse management, seeding, transplanting, watering,
etc. 

Interns will work alongside our
dynamic and diverse production team, including our Farm Manager, Field
Managers, Field Interns.  Interns may
also work with our many youth and adult volunteers, during our open volunteer
days (two or three times per week). 

This
position is suited for a college student seeking course credit, or a
Baltimore-based individual interested in experiencing the operation of an urban
production farm hands-on. The position is flexible: 8-20 hrs per week from May through August - Monday to Saturday, depending on availability.

Responsibilities

  • Harvesting, cleaning, and storing vegetables;
  • Seed starting in greenhouse, thinning seedlings, and nutrient
    application;
  • Bed preparation: rock picking, cultivating, weeding, and working with
    drip irrigation;
  • Direct sowing in fields;
  • Crop maintenance (mulching, weeding, feeding);
  • Composting and vermicomposting;
  • Farm upkeep: mowing tractor ways and grass borders, weed-whacking,
    building;
  • Repairs, painting; and
  • Helping direct youth and adult volunteers. 

Qualifications


A
successful candidate will have:
 

  • Excellent communication skills and excellent
    interpersonal skills; 
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Is able to lift 35 pounds;
  • Ability to manage details and complete assignments in an efficient
    and effective manner;
  • Enthusiasm for sustainable food movement; and
  • Is able to
    work in all weather conditions.
     

Compensation 

  • While this position is unpaid, interns who commit to completing 300 hours over the summer may be eligible for an
    AmeriCorps education award.
  • Additionally, interns are welcome to take home surplus farm produce,
    which is often available. 
  • Interns will
    be invited to regular on-farm workshops about sustainable agriculture and the
    food system as well as field trips to other Baltimore-region farms.
