Our books, products, and program activities help stimulate new ideas, educate professionals and the public, inspire environmental protection, and prepare the next generation of environmental leaders.
Position Overview
We seek energetic and enthusiastic environmentalists for various intern positions in our Washington, DC headquarters. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented with excellent organizational and computer skills and available 10-20 hours per week.
Editorial Intern
- We seek a highly detail-oriented individual eager to learn the skills and knowledge needed for an editorial position in the publishing industry.
- Responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating proposals; assisting with proofreading manuscripts, marketing materials, and electronic books; and providing general administrative support for the editorial department. Intern will also participate in editorial planning and ‘decision to publish' meetings, attend cover and book launch meetings, and learn more about all aspects of book publishing from an intern seminar series.
- Ideal candidate is interested in pursuing a career in editing or publishing and has an interest in the environment. Excellent organizational skills are a must.
Production Intern
- The Production Department seeks a detailed-oriented individual eager to learn the production aspects of book publishing. As the Production Intern, you will help the production team usher our environmental books through to the final product.
- Specific responsibilities include preparing, coding, and trafficking manuscripts; preparing digital e-book PDF files; light proofreading, and compiling text corrections. The intern will provide general administrative support for the production team.
- Candidate must have basic computer skills and ability to multitask. Familiarity with proofreading, copy editing, Chicago Manual of Style, Acrobat and Microsoft Office Suite a plus.
- Individuals who want a great introduction to book publishing are ideal!
Web & Social Media Intern
- The marketing department seeks a creative student that is passionate about all aspects of environmental protection and is eager to learn more about book publishing.
- The intern will help shape Island Press' social media presence, assist with website development and content creation, and support our textbook marketing program.
- The ideal candidate will be familiar with content management systems and possess a working knowledge of html, css, Twitter, Facebook, Google analytics, WordPress, and Photoshop.
- Superior writing skills are required. Please include two non-academic writing samples and three sample tweets about the news and/or the environment with your submission.
Publicity Intern
- We seek a detail-oriented individual eager to learn key facets of public relations for books on environmental issues.
- The intern will learn to write press materials including press releases, email pitches, and author bios, and to research media outlets. S/he will be responsible for monitoring press coverage of the organization's authors and titles, and assisting in coordination of author schedules and local event outreach.
- This is a great opportunity for an intern to learn who's who among environmental journalists at national publications and journals, in addition to learning about the publishing process, including book review publications, and some of the most pressing environmental issues our society faces.
- Qualified candidates are excellent writers, organized, capable of multi-tasking and confident presenting information by phone. Creativity and a love for books is a must!
Development Intern
- The Development and Programs team is seeking an intern who wants to learn more about nonprofit development and communications. The intern will work closely with the Development and Programs team assisting with fundraising and outreach strategies.
- Internship duties include researching, coordinating events, coordinating mailings to supporters, drafting and editing correspondence, and updating the database with current donor activity. This internship is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, is able to handle many tasks at once, has strong writing, editing, and research skills, and can function well with minimal supervision.
- The position provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of a nonprofit organization and the environment.
IT Intern
- Our Information Technology department seeks a creative individual to assist with website development, and computer/network support.
- Duties will include web research, user support and training, and hardware troubleshooting and upgrades. Candidate should be detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks at once.
- Computer literacy is essential and some knowledge of computer hardware, Windows/Mac, MS office, ticketing systems, and anti-virus is a great advantage.
