Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Energy Engineer to join our Los Angeles office. The Arup Energy Group focuses on identifying and supporting the development of solutions that reduce our clients' energy costs and operational risks through intelligent, financially viable, and environmentally sustainable projects by means of retro-commissioning and energy conservation measure assessments. Our energy clients include utilities, state energy agencies, local governments, international banks, large college and university campuses, hospitals, office buildings, and industrial facilities.
This position requires a broad knowledge of energy consuming systems, especially within existing facilities (HVAC, lighting, process loads, etc.), energy management systems, and various distributed energy technologies. Understanding and experience with project permitting, costing, and construction is necessary. We are seeking someone who is willing to see projects through to completion while excelling at customer relations. Most weeks will involve two to three days of local travel to customer sites with some travel to other regions of California. There may be travel to other locations in the U.S. as opportunities arise and as the engineer desires.
Qualifications:
This individual should have the following skills:
- Knowledge of the retro-commissioning process for existing buildings: concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Experience in conducting and reviewing building energy audits, especially those prepared under that auspices of a government or utility energy efficiency or demand response program.
- Knowledge of energy retrofit financing, guaranteed energy savings contracts, and energy savings performance contracting (ESCO)
- Experience with Measurement and Verification (M&V), especially the IPMVP Protocol.
- Technical experience in design, commissioning, or auditing mechanical and electrical systems.
- Extensive proficiency in building and campus central plant designs, operating strategies, and equipment selections, especially with cogeneration and advanced cooling and heating systems.
- Current knowledge of renewable energy technologies, vendors, and equipment, especially for commercial solar PV and solar thermal systems.
- Experience with retail power purchasing contracts and wholesale power markets.
- Maintain client relationships by establishing credibility with customers, market influencers, upper management, and salespeople.
- Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to review for accuracy the output from computer energy models and utilize the data on projects.
Ability to use any of the following energy modeling programs:
- Trane TRACE, EnergyPro, EQuest, IES, EnergyPlus.
- Models will range in complexity based on phase of project or the extent of scope, but generally will be used for sustainable masterplanning energy use intensity studies, retrocommissioning energy conservation measure reviews, life-cycle cost analysis for new building design or substantial retrofit investments, submission for compliance with the local energy code and USGBC LEED requirements.
Minimum Requirements:
- Engineering bachelor's degree required in electrical or mechanical engineering.
- Technical experience as proven by a project list with energy management work on at least 4 projects of a minimum cost of $500,000 resulting in at least a 20% energy cost savings.
- 6-10 years of industry experience with significant experience (5+ years) in the fields of energy engineering and/or energy consulting.
- Proven experience with leading staff to achieve aggressive goals in energy products and services markets.
- Good communication skills essential for team-based working.
- Excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment.
- Must be highly motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges.
- Able to perform a variety of tasks.
- Able to lead and direct the work of others.
- Able to rely on experience and judgment to assess the extent of work, and then plan and accomplish goals.
- Able to travel to client sites and other remote locations.
- Able to independently conduct energy analyses of building systems and equipment.
- Provide direction and supervision of other Arup staff while at client sites.
- This individual should be a confident and professional self-starter, a good listener, comfortable interfacing with senior level leadership, aggressive and proactive in meeting objectives, focused on meeting the customer's needs, and should work well within a multi-disciplinary team.
Additional Desirable Qualities:
- Ideal candidates will have a Masters in Engineering and come from the field of energy consulting, the energy efficiency or demand side management organizations of a utility, energy services companies, or facilities management firms.
- Ideal candidates will have familiarity with modeling techniques associated with newer low-energy systems such as chilled beams, radiant surfaces, natural ventilation, ground source heat rejection, renewable energy technologies, thermal energy storage, net zero energy approaches, etc.
Ideal candidates will have one or more of the following certifications:
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
- LEED AP O+M
- High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certified by ASHRAE
- Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP)
- ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) certification
