The Indoor Climate Research & Training (ICRT) program is part of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), a division of the Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois. The program began when the University of Illinois received a grant to establish a training center for those involved in the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP).  

Position Overview:

In support of its mission and vision, Indoor Climate Research & Training (ICRT) is seeking a Research Specialist to join its team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. ICRT is a national leader in research and training in the fields of energy efficiency and indoor air quality in residential buildings. ICRT conducts research and provides policy support for state and federal agencies. ICRT operates Illinois' first accredited weatherization training center and administers the training certification program for the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP).

The certification program provides job training for staff members from 35 local community action agencies throughout the state who perform weatherization work such as insulation, air sealing, and HVAC work in order to lower energy costs for low income households. ICRT staff members sit on multiple national committees and boards that focus on delivering energy-efficient and healthy housing.

This is a full-time, academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform research on energy use and indoor environmental quality in buildings. 
  • Develop proposals to submit to outside funding agencies.
  • Manage, analyze, and translate research and monitoring data into scientific findings and submit recommendations to funding agencies.
  • Develop training/education/publications on findings and recommendations of sponsored research projects.
  • Present research results at scientific meetings and at meetings with sponsoring agencies.
  • Translate the scientific data to lay communities and in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Work jointly with a number of varied constituencies while observing standards of professional conduct. 
  • Keep current on IHWAP and DOE requirements and guidelines.
  • Develop and provide weatherization training to adult learners.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Science, Technology, Mathematics, or Engineering (STEM).
  • Minimum three years' experience in applied building science (for example, in energy efficiency or indoor air quality).
  • Presentation experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred

  • Master's degree.
  • Previous experience in the instruction of adult learners.
  • Research experience. 

Compensation: Salary range of $40K to $60K; commensurate with experience and qualifications.
