The Native Village of Eyak Traditional Council is a tribal government that promotes self-determination to Native Village of Eyak tribal members. Under the guidance of the Council, tribal offices provide health and social services, economic development, natural resource/environmental education, jobs, and job training to the Native Village of Eyak.

The Tribe operates in a way that is acceptable to Alaska Native cultural values and traditions in order to enhance the well being of our People both physically and spiritually. The Tribal Council seeks ways to enrich tribal living through community-operated tribal programs and self-determination opportunities.

Position Overview:

This is a position within the Native Village of Eyak's Department of the Environment and Natural Resources working in established programs both in the field and office. This position supports the DENR Director in successfully conducting Natural Resources projects related to fisheries, wildlife, and energy, and may also be utilized in environmental programs. The incumbent may also be directly responsible for all aspects of projects and will be expected to pursue funding to sustain the position and expand natural resources programs.

Supervision of subordinate technicians will be required at times, as will regular travel, and frequent fieldwork in remote areas. The incumbent establishes methods and procedures for attaining specific goals and objectives, and receives guidance in terms of broad goals.


Responsibilities:

Receive and implement direction from DENR director
Work at remote sites for up to four weeks at a time.
Support project managers in successfully completing projects;
Supervise subordinate technicians in the office and at field sites;
Collect reliable and accurate data;
Assist with data Quality Assurance/Quality Control and report writing as needed;
Assist with the coordination of Tribal education opportunities;
Assist with the hiring and training of seasonal/temporary technicians;
Logistical support including, but not limited to, helicopter sling loading, ordering/purchasing gear
and supplies, delivering supplies to remote sites, assessing and reporting on field conditions,
determining points of access/egress to remote sites, conducting safety briefings, camp
mobilization/demobilization;
Other duties as developed and assigned.

Qualifications: 


Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Ability to communicate effectively within the team and with supervisor;
  • Ability to follow policies and regulations; Skilled in Microsoft Office and basic computer programs;
  • Ability to think logically through problems and present solutions to supervisors;
  • Skilled in oral and written communication; particularly
  • technical writing;
  • Knowledge of data quality controls and basic scientific method pertaining to the management of natural resources;
  • Ability to manage a team under difficult conditions to achieve project
  • goals;
  • Skilled in solo small boat operations; and
  • Knowledge of small engine and outboard repair.


Experience Requirement:

  • Minimum two years experience working in natural resources fields;
  • Experience with project management, field research, sampling and data collection, and public awareness education; and
  • Minimum 6 months experience working at remote research sites.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biology, fisheries biology or elated field; and
  • Basic Certification in Geographic Information Systems Technology.


Performance standard:

  • Regularly lifts and carries 75 lbs. over rough terrain over extended periods of time.
  • Typically lifts, moves, bends, and walks and uses continuous physical activity to complete work.
  • Typically uses hands, eyes and muscle coordination to operate boats, power and hand tools.
  • Typically uses balance, eyesight and fine motor skills to coordinate and complete work.


Environmental Factors:

  • The work is performed both in the office and outdoors. 
  • The position may require a considerable amount of physical activity while conducting fieldwork, including hiking and climbing over difficult terrain.
  • Employee will be required to stay for extended periods of time in remote camps (up to 4 months).
  • Work will include exposure to severe weather (heat, cold and wet), hazards associated with power tools, hazards associated with traps to collect fish, and working in areas containing large predators (including, but not limited to, bears and wolves).
  • Work will be conducted in remote settings, often on dangerous rivers,
  • marine habitats, rainforests, snowpack, frozen rivers and lakes, wetlands, and in office settings.
  • All new employees are subject to a standard 90-day probation period.

Compensation: Salary range is $35,000.00-$55,000.00 and this fulltime positon provides benefits.
