BOCES is the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, a regional education agency that was established in 1948 by the state legislature. Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, one of 37 in New York State, acts as a regional center to support local school districts, offering quality, cost-effective programs and services.

Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES serves approximately 60,000 preschoolers through 12th graders, plus thousands of adults in 18 school districts: Bedford, Brewster, Briarcliff, Carmel, Chappaqua, Croton-Harmon, Garrison, Haldane, Hendrick Hudson, Katonah-Lewisboro, Lakeland, Mahopac, North Salem, Ossining, Peekskill, Putnam Valley, Somers and Yorktown. We also serve school districts and municipalities in Rockland, Southern Westchester and Dutchess counties. 

The main campus is on BOCES Drive in Yorktown Heights, with ancillary campuses on Fox Meadow Road in Yorktown, at the Madden Outdoor Education Center on Miller Hill Road in Kent, and at 12 local school buildings in 10 school districts. We are a non-residential program which serves some 36,000 students. During the school year instruction takes place Monday - Friday, at our nature center, local schools, or other outreach sites. There will be occasional weekend programs with compensation.

Our program offerings include: ecosystem studies, sustainability programs, wildlife, team building programs, history programs and unique programs such as our Monster Storms and Climate Change program, the Earth Portable Classroom and our collaborative predator program with a local wolf center.

Position Overview:

Environmental educator needed at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Center for Environmental Education for school year and summer camp. Position begins September 3rd. 

Responsibilities:

  • In addition to full-time teaching, the person in this position is responsible for the development of exhibits, maintaining and developing program material, animal/birds of prey care and working with a limited number of overnights for additional pay.
  • Birds of prey training will be provided.
  • Individual will also have caretaking duties as well as rotating weekend facility security duty.
  • Caretaking duties include mowing, grounds keeping and cleaning.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in the environmental/biology field.
  • 1 year teaching experience in a nature center or residential center setting.
  • A strong natural science background and an understanding of sustainable systems.
  • Individual must be creative, flexible, motivated, able to work both independently and with a small staff and take pride in their work.
  • Must have a car to drive to schools, although schedule is set up to ride-share whenever possible.

Compensation: $80/day for September - June, $140/day for summer camp programs, an excellent health benefit package, housing in a shared apartment with private bedrooms and on-site laundry. In addition, there is a $1500 caretaker stipend.
