Dakota Resource Council (DRC) was formed in 1978 to protect North Dakota's land, air, water, rural communities and agricultural economy. DRC is working for preservation of family farms, enforcement of corporate farming laws, soil and water conservation, regulation of coal mining and oil and gas development, protection of groundwater and clean air, renewable energy, and sound management of solid and toxic wastes.
Dakota Resource Council is a nonprofit, grassroots activist organization. The mission of DRC is to form enduring, democratic local groups that empower people to influence decision-making processes that affect their lives. Membership fees begin at $15 for an low income or student membership and $55 for a household membership.
Position Overview:
Dakota Resource Council, North Dakota's only home-grown, independent grassroots organization, is looking for two full-time field organizers. Responsibilities include working with people to address issues with sound and successful organizing efforts, empowering people to speak for themselves on issues that impact their lives and livelihoods. Each organizer will work on one or more issue such as, clean energy, agriculture, or impacts from oil and gas development in North Dakota. Positions will be based in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Responsibilities:
The community organizer's specific work assignments will be determined based on the organization's priorities and available resources, and may include time spent:
- Organizing or coordinating a multi-county or statewide issue campaign and task force;
- Working with one or more of DRC's existing local chapters;
- Conducting a new chapter organizing assessment and/or drive;
- Spearheading a particular project or programmatic area;
- Coordinating a specific fundraising activity or program;
- Organizing an event, leadership training or workshop;
- Producing or assisting with communications through traditional or social media; or
- Other activities and assignments as needed.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to the mission and goals of the organization, and the community organizing approach to social change;
- Leadership and organizational development capabilities;
- Fundraising ability;
- Familiarity with the public policy process;
- Experience in issue campaigns, political campaigns and/or community organizing activities;
- Familiarity with western North Dakota and, for one of the positions, knowledge of impacts from oil and gas development;
- Excellent communication and people skills; ability to write well is a must; web and social media expertise is a plus;
- High level of maturity;
- Capacity to work independently as a salaried employee on a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends; and
- Willing to travel both in- and out-of-state as necessary, using a DRC vehicle when possible, but able to use his or her own vehicle (with mileage compensation) when necessary.
