Why NVRPA? In the late 1950's, the Northern Virginia Planning District Commission and a group of citizens from several local jurisdictions came together to protect Northern Virginia's rich heritage of woods, meadows, lakes and streams from the threat of suburban sprawl.

These citizens, working with their local governments--Fairfax County, Arlington County and the City of Falls Church--organized under the Virginia Park Authorities Act in 1959 as the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA). They came together to plan, acquire develop and operate a system of regional parks for all Northern Virginians to enjoy.

Position Overview:

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority has a full-time opening for a Horticulture Specialist at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Vienna, VA.  

The Horticulture Specialist is responsible for performing skilled gardening and landscape work and is involved with the operation of the greenhouse/propagation. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Botanical Gardens Manager, with moderate latitude for independent judgment and action.

May be delegated to assume charge of the Botanical Gardens in the absence of the Botanical Gardens Manager. Annual performance goals will be set for the Horticultural Specialist. 

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain comprehensive program for the collection of plants and subsequent installation and maintenance of planted areas
  • Assist with Garden-wide Special Events
  • Supervise staff including seasonal employees and volunteers
  • Perform administrative duties
  • Assist with management of facility operations and maintenance
  • Maintain and provide technical knowledge

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited degree program with a 4-year degree preferred (two-year Associate degree required) in Horticulture or closely related field

Physical:

  • Non-manual and manual work with strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions in outdoor settings
  • Will perform heavy manual work in all weather conditions, lift items at or greater than 80 pounds, climb ladders, use hand tools and operate equipment

Experience:

  • 3 years of extensive experience in a horticulture or landscape garden setting, or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience

Compensation: Annual starting salary $40,841. Excellent Benefits.
