Founded in 2012, ForestEthics Advocacy (FEA) is a registered Canadian nonprofit society. FEA's purpose is to conserve and protect the natural environments of Canada while allowing for their sustainable use. We advocate for industry?wide changes in the extraction, purchasing and sourcing of natural resources and seek to achieve large scale, legislated protection of endangered forests and wild places. FEA exists as part of a three? member coalition including ForestEthics Solutions Society (registered nonprofit society in Canada, founded in 2012) and ForestEthics (501c3 nonprofit organization in the United States, founded in 2000).

ForestEthics Coalition's shared mission is to protect Endangered Forests and wild places, wildlife, and human wellbeing. We catalyze environmental leadership among industry, governments and communities by running hard?hitting and highly effective campaigns that leverage public dialogue and pressure to achieve our goals.

Our current campaigns focus on fighting climate change, protecting wild places in Canada, and transforming industries that use products that come from these places. Our efforts have helped protect more than 65 million acres of forests and transformed the environmental practices of Fortune 500 companies including Whole Foods, Bed Bath and Beyond, Dell, Staples, Office Depot, Victoria's Secret, and many others.

Position Overview:

The Campaigns Director will help achieve FEA's organizational mission, goals and objectives by successfully leading FEA's Canadian Tar Sands Campaign and providing leadership for FEA's other Canadian campaigns. In coordination with the FEA team the Campaigns Director will develop and assess strategies, create and manage budgets, and guide campaign planning and implementation.

Responsibilities:

Essential Function:

  • Provide leadership and direction for FEA's Canadian Tar Sands campaign
  • Work closely with ForestEthics?US to leverage the US Tar Sands campaign work in Canada
  • Provide leadership for all of FEA's campaigns
  • Develop and release relevant reports and studies
  • Lead government relations activities for Enbridge Pipeline
  • Develop and hone strategies to maintain and increase political and corporate pressure, including identifying and pursuing opportunities for high profile media/communications
  • Serve as spokesperson for FEA's Tar Sands campaign in the media and assist with Enbridge Pipeline media as needed
  • Evaluate other proposed energy development projects (within our regional scope), such as Kinder Morgan and Liquid Natural Gas proposals, and determine FEA's position and potential role
  • Oversee and steward key corporate relationships as necessary
  • Facilitate and guide the strategic planning and execution of FEA campaigns and communications
  • Supervise, integrate and coordinate team member activities
  • Participate in foundation and major donor briefings, cultivation, stewardship and solicitation, as well as writing and editing funding proposals and reports as identified by the development department.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic direction and managerial oversight of FEA's Canadian Tar Sands campaign, including the strategic development of the campaign and annual planning.
  • Collaboration with campaigners to identify and implement the most effective campaign strategies and tactics possible in light of available resources.
  • Oversight and management of FEA's Canadian Tar Sands Budget: Tracking funding progress and actual expenditures.
  • Coordination between FEA's Canadian Tar Sands campaign and the Development, Communications and Organizing teams
  • Supervise 2 to 3 direct reports
  • Negotiation with government and industry

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of global energy issues, and Canadian and US oil industry issues
  • Commitment to environmental justice in general and FEA's campaign goals in particular
  • 7?10 years related experience or a 4?year college degree in related field with 4 years experience; prior experience with campaigns and media relations required
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with budgeting and planning
  • Strong supervisory skills, including mentoring and advising
  • High interpersonal, facilitation, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to organize and maintain sound relationships with coalition partners and other groups
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Proven ability to think strategically and tactically
  • High level time management skills
  • High level negotiating and conflict resolution skills
  • Intermediate math skills as demonstrated by the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Very high reasoning skills as demonstrated by the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Highest language skills as demonstrated by the ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents; ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints; ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style; ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Computer proficiency in basic computer applications, including spreadsheet, word processing and internet
  • Comfortable working in a fast?paced and ever?changing environment
  • Ability and willingness to travel

Compensation: This is a full?time position with excellent benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
