Earthworks (formerly Mineral Policy Center) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting communities and the environment from the destructive impacts of mining and energy development while seeking sustainable solutions. We fulfill our mission by supporting communities and grassroots groups, by publicizing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of mining, and by working to improve government policies and corporate practices.
Position Overview:
We are seeking candidates for our No Dirty Gold Campaign/International Program Coordinator position. Our international team works to end irresponsible mining practices around the world by undertaking the following activities:
- Educating and informing the public, media, consumers, and corporations about mining's impacts;
- Leveraging market pressure on retailers, manufacturers of products that use gold and other metals through the No Dirty Gold campaign;
- Providing research, media, and campaign support to communities and local organizations around the world who are faced with irresponsible mining operations (either proposed or operating mines);
- Working to influence mining policies and regulations by monitoring and engaging with financial institutions, governments and corporations;
- Participating in and monitoring efforts to develop independent, third-party certification for mining and metals.
The International Program Coordinator (IPC) provides program support to Earthworks' international program in all these areas. The IPC also works closely with partners around the world, providing support to local campaigns.
The position reports to the International Program Director and is based in Washington, DC.
We are looking for candidates with very strong research, writing and editing skills, experience and skills in corporate campaigning, and a background and interest in international work. We seek an IPC candidate who is analytical and adept at strategic thinking. The position requires interaction with a wide range of individuals and organizations, and effective interpersonal skills and diplomacy are essential to the job. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Develop understanding and working knowledge of environmental, technical, and financial issues related to mining.
- Conduct research and analysis related to mining impacts, corporations, financial markets, product supply chains, etc.
- Build and maintain working relationships with external partners - community-based organizations, NGOs, labor unions, and other groups.
- Propose creative approaches to successfully boost local and global campaigns.
- Provide support to local campaigns and partners by providing research and technical assistance, pressuring financial institutions and mining corporations, developing media materials, etc.
- Provide research and analysis on mining standards and mining certification systems.
- Prepare or assist in the preparation of high-quality research reports.
- Prepare campaign materials such as electronic action alerts, newsletters, website updates, fact sheets, etc.
- Draft press releases, op-eds and letters to the editor and actively seek out media opportunities for campaign.
- Respond to information requests from reporters, partners, funders, etc.
- Work with IT Director to develop and maintain program portions of Earthworks' International Program websites (Earthworks, No Dirty Gold) and update the No Dirty Gold Facebook page and Twitter feed.
- Provide information and supporting materials, as needed, for international program grant proposals.
- Keep up-to-date and complete program files.
- Organize conference calls, meetings, and strategy discussions.
- Maintain and build records of important contacts for the International Program.
- Assist with intern hiring, which includes advertising and interviewing, and with intern orientation and supervision.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in related field.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Spanish fluency strongly preferred.
- Campaigning experience preferred.
- Work experience in a related field.
- Diplomacy and effective interpersonal skills.
- Strong verbal presentation skills.
- Be well-organized and detail-oriented.
- Decision-making skills and ability to manage time and priorities effectively.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced atmosphere and juggle multiple tasks.
- A flexible and positive attitude.
- Commitment to environmental, human rights and social issues.
- Knowledge about mining issues, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.

As needed, the IPC may be delegated lead responsibility for specific projects under supervision of the campaign director. The IPC may also be called on to shift priorities at short notice.
This is not an hourly position. In providing program support, the IPC must be willing to adapt their hours to the needs of the organization. This could mean long hours during crunch time. The position may also involve a travel component, and candidates must be willing to travel domestically and internationally, if needed.
In an effort to keep administrative cost to a minimum, staff will also be expected to handle most of their own support work and to help as needed with some office and administrative functions. The position also requires participation in program and organizational planning activities that range from monthly meetings, to annual planning, to long-term strategic planning.

Compensation: This position is full-time with health, dental and other benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position is based in our Washington, DC office, but applicants based in other locations will be considered.
