The Sandhills Area Land Trust, a non-profit conservation organization located in Southern Pines and Fayetteville, is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Environmental Education Coordinator to spearhead its new pilot program initiative - "Sand In My Shoes: Take A Child Outdoors" reconnecting children and families to the natural world around them.
Position Overview:
The Environmental Education Coordinator position is a part-time position, designed to develop and teach natural history lessons and activities for 4th grade students and families through classroom instruction as well as outdoor educational field experiences, fostering understanding and appreciation of the NC Sandhills Region. The coordinator will be responsible for conducting environmental education lessons targeted at 4th grade students in 48 of the 53 elementary schools in the Fayetteville/ Ft. Bragg area.
The position will involve 2 days each week (16 hrs - Monday thru Friday) dedicated to planning and executing the classroom learning activities and a half day (4 hrs) on Saturday focused on outdoor learning experiences for students and their families. The curriculum will include activities from Project Wild and Project Learning Tree in addition to other environmental education experiences.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in biology or related field of study. Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience or outdoor environmental education equivalent. Working knowledge of the natural sciences including botany, zoology, ornithology and geology. NC Environmental Education Certification, preferred.
Demonstrated success in teaching and public speaking. Proficient in all Microsoft Office programs and demonstrate competency in designing creative informational materials such as flyers, brochures, press releases, newsletter articles and take-home activity handouts. Ability to communicate with groups of mixed ages and differing degrees of science understanding. Experienced and skilled in writing a lesson outline with a clear theme and/or learning objective. Ability to inspire appreciation of the natural world.
Compensation: Salary: $17,000
