Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture Coordinator

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is the only conservation group whose sole mission is to conserve native wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. ABC accomplishes its mission through direct action and by engaging the people, groups, resources, and strategies needed to succeed. It undertakes the full spectrum of bird conservation issues using advocacy and habitat conservation strategies.

Position Overview:

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), an international bird conservation organization, is seeking to employ a Joint Venture Coordinator to expand the capability and capacity of the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture (AMJV) to successfully achieve the AMJV partnership's conservation objectives. The AMJV Coordinator works to facilitate overall planning, implementation, and evaluation activities of an international coordinated bird conservation partnership in the Appalachian Mountains Bird Conservation Region. The Coordinator works with the AMJV Technical Committee and Working Groups to identify priority areas and actions to benefit priority birds.

The Coordinator also helps develop and foster local partnerships for targeted habitat delivery projects within priority areas. The Coordinator may be called on to work with the AMJV Technical Committee and Working Groups to develop population models for priority species, GIS maps and applications, and consolidate data on regional bird populations, habitat status and conservation needs. The Coordinator communicates and provides technical assistance with technical committees, partners, landowners, communities, and others for the development and implementation of bird conservation actions within the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture Region.

This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). The Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture Coordinator will further the cause of a NABCI-based biologically driven, landscape-oriented, regionally based partnership for the full spectrum of bird conservation. The Coordinator will work closely with all of the major stakeholders in bird conservation in the Appalachian Mountains, the U.S., and even internationally, to develop shared objectives and achieve bird conservation goals. The Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture Coordinator reports to the Vice President of Conservation Science, as well as the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture's Management Board.

Responsibilities:

The Coordinator will integrate objectives from the pertinent Partners in Flight physiographic area Bird Conservation Plans with population and habitat objectives that have been set for waterfowl, shorebirds, colonial waterbirds, upland game birds, and with other biodiversity and natural resource agendas. The Coordinator will adhere to the Joint Venture's Implementation Plan for bird conservation (approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2008) and the Joint Venture Operational Plan (approved by the AMJV Management Board in 2011), and will revise/update these plans at appropriate time intervals.

The ultimate goal of the Coordinator is to foster, develop, and deliver the full range of bird conservation to meet objectives identified by partners in the Joint Venture.

The Coordinator will work closely with the state wildlife agencies, federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other conservation partnerships (e.g., LCCs, fish habitat partnerships, etc.) within the region, as well as adjacent Joint Ventures. The Coordinator will represent the mission and work of ABC and integrate it into the work of the Joint Venture partnership.

The Coordinator will advance the science of bird conservation in the Appalachians, with applications to other regions.

The Coordinator will supervise other Joint Venture staff; oversee contracts, grants, and research projects with Joint Venture partners; and help partners develop proposals that will further the mission of the Joint Venture.

Qualifications:

Job requirements fall into 2 broad categories: working effectively with partners in the conservation community and understanding the biology and conservation needs of birds and their habitats. Specifically, applicants should have:

• 3 or more years experience in partnership-based conservation.
• At least a Bachelors' Degree (with very significant work experience) and preferably a graduate degree in a resource management or biological field.
• An in-depth understanding of the geography, land use, conservation issues, birds, and conservation partners in the Appalachian Mountains.
• A willingness and ability to travel frequently.
