Position Overview:
The Career Counselor helps students examine their interests, styles, and their abilities to find and enter the profession that best suits them. The counselor then coaches the student through the process of researching fields that match their interests, setting up informational interviews with people to supplement their research, and finally targeting or creating specific job positions that meet their needs. The counselor tries to empower the students to become as active as possible in their search by providing information on The Channel and with career workshops.
Responsibilities:
Personal Career Counseling. Meets with every BGI student in person, by phone or via e-mail twice a year.
Records & Reporting. Maintains the career services database, reviews the resumes of the students and conducts preliminary interview sessions with the students. Maintains the Career Services section on The Channel.
Career Workshops. Design and deliver monthly - BGI Career Planning & Work Transition sessions (delivered live, but with the consideration of distance learners) on topics such as:
- A Personal Assessment
- The Resume
- A Job Search Strategy/Marketing Plan
- Building & Maintaining Relationships
- Letters
- Consultative Interviewing
- Negotiating
Placement. Meets with executives of various companies and invite them to participate in the placement sessions conducted by the institution.
Strategic & Operational Advice. Advise BGI staff in analysis, design and planning for evolution and improvement of BGI Career and Placement Services for students and alumni (e.g., coordination of course-related processes; placement and career support services satisfaction metrics and improvement).
Qualifications:
Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
- Business connections. Extensive and current connections to local business community strongly preferred.
- Communications skills. Good public speaker with strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, in both face-to-face and on-line environments. Authors well-organized and thorough situational assessments, action plans, and progress reports. Good listening skills.
- Team player. Places a higher emphasis on contributions to a work team, rather than on receiving recognition for personal contribution. Establish and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, students, staff, professional peers and the public.
- Strong technical skill set. Demonstrated ability to operate in Windows operating environment. Competent with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Well organized. Good time management and task prioritization skills. Develops and adheres to consistent structure for document labeling, filing, retention and retrieval, and actively promotes and supports the use of such structure across the organization.
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor's degree required.

Compensation: Salary Grade: Exempt, mid 20's (Half Time Annual Salary)
Hours Worked & Location: Half-time, at the BGI Seattle office with frequent evening and weekend work. Regular attendance at Evening MBA and Certificate classes, and attends portions of hybrid-program Intensives.
