The California League of Conservation Voters is the political arm of California's environmental community. CLCV is an exciting, fast-paced organization that supports environmental candidates for public office, advocates for environmental legislation and increases public awareness of the environmental performance of those public officials.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the senior management team, the VP for Development will be responsible for planning, implementing and managing all fundraising and membership programs for California League of Conservation Voters and the CLCV Education Fund.
Building on current relationships with members, individual donors, corporate partners, and institutional funders, the VP for Development will plan for and execute strategies to significantly increase contributed income and stakeholder engagement. The VP for Development will harness the potential of CLCV's strong brand to increase the organization's visibility, and grow and deepen partnerships across the state.
The VP for Development will manage a team of 4 staff consisting of a Major Gifts Officer, Donor Relations Manager, Director of Membership, and Development Associate (C3).
Responsibilities:
Planning, Budgeting and Management:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive resource development plan incorporating membership major gifts, foundation relations, events, online giving, and corporate partnerships, in collaboration with staff and board members.
- Develop an annual fundraising budget, and develop and manage benchmarks and metrics to ensure budgeted goals are met or exceeded.
- Manage, mentor and develop the fundraising and membership teams.
- Create and sustain strong working partnerships with other members of the senior management team and members of both the CLCV and CLCV Education Fund boards.
Institutional Giving:
- Oversee the development and stewardship of strategic alliances and strong working partnerships with corporate funders and sponsors.
- Manage the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of foundation support, and ensure that grant requirements are met or exceeded.
Online Giving:
- Design and implement an online outreach program to expand the cultivation and engagement of new members and increase online donations.
- Research, develop and implement a strategy to integrate phone and online giving to allow for multiple channels of contacts for donors and members.
Major Gifts:
- Develop and oversee the implementation of a major gifts program that increases number and size of gifts over time.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit and participate in strategy development and stewardship of selected major gift prospects.
- Staff the CLCV board Development Committee and provide coaching and guidance to the CEO and board members to support and strengthen the CLCV and CLCV Education Fund boards' leadership role in major gifts fundraising.
Membership:
- Develop and implement new strategies for membership/activist recruitment and renewal to support a stable, diversified, and growing funding base.
- Develop, test, and integrate new contact programs to ensure CLCV's best return on investment in member/activist acquisition tools.
Development Operations and Administration:
- Develop and implement a strategy to integrate phone and online contacts into a shared system
- Ensure cohesive and integrated fundraising policies and practices between CLCV and the CLCV Education Fund.
- Ensure the efficiency and integrity of CLCV's member and donor data collection and management.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 15 years' experience in similar roles of increasing responsibility and leadership with at least 10 of those years in development for non-profit organizations.
- Success in personally securing multiple major gifts ($100,000+) from individuals, foundations and corporations.
- Proven success in developing and implementing a comprehensive giving program including major gifts, annual giving, events, grants and corporate sponsorships.
- Depth of experience in integration of phone, online and direct mail strategies for donor acquisition and retention.
- Excellent communication skills including verbal, writing and presentation skills; experience in public speaking and promotional writing.
- Proven ability to manage and retain a high performing team of development professionals.
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate or related field
- Passion for conservation and the natural world.
Preferred but not required:
- Knowledge of conservation funding community.
- Experience working on electoral campaigns and familiarity with the landscape of California politics.
