Description
The Santa Ana Watershed Association develops, coordinates and implements natural resource programs that support a sustainable ecosystem and social benefits from the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.
Position Overview:
The position is both field- and office-based and requires herbicide application experience and knowledge of restoration principles.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise SAWA's eradication and restoration projects.
- Conduct field surveys for exotic plant species in and adjacent to areas where exotic removal projects are underway to determine the effectiveness of treatments. Compile field notes and take photo points of removal areas.
- Coordinate with SAWA and member agency staff on invasive species removal and control projects, and assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual monitoring of these projects.
- Track all SAWA restoration sites, maintaining and constantly updating the maintenance schedule for each site ensuring that staff/contractor control work is adequate on all sites.
- Develop treatment recommendations and coordinate herbicide application activities.
- Train and advise field crews while completing some hands-on eradication/restoration work when needed.
- Effectively interact with various state and federal agency personnel, environmental groups, and the general public.
- Map all SAWA restoration and project sites using GIS mapping tools and software.
- Assist with restoration projects as needed, and coordinate with the SAWA lead biologist on special projects related to invasive plant and sensitive species monitoring within those projects.
- Assist SAWA member agency staff in developing planting methodology and palettes for restoration areas.
- Coordinate restoration projects which include, assist with plant palette development, oversee actual planting and monitor site to ensure success criteria are met.
- Supervise the collection of water samples according to protocol during herbicide applications
- Assist Executive Director with the SAWA annual report.
Qualifications:
- A college degree in a related field is desired.
- Must have experience with identification of local native and exotic plant species such as Arundo donax.
- Must have additional field experience in the assessment of natural community types within the Santa Ana Watershed.
- Must have experience supervising staff.
- Must be proficient with GIS mapping software
- Must possess current California driver's license, auto insurance and have reliable vehicle for use on dirt roads.
- Candidate must possess an applicator certificate or license from the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
- Must have general habitat restoration knowledge including proper planting and monitoring techniques.
- Must have the ability to conduct report writing.
- Must be able to work with others on a team.
- Must be able to work weekends and some evenings.
- Must have experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
Physical Requirements:
The employee will be required to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs, as well as working in outdoor conditions.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience.
