Position Overview: 

The Program Associate, Environmental Certification Services will work with clients who manufacture products and want to make environmental claims on these product. For this particular position, the Associate will initially work within the Indoor Air Quality and level Programs, focusing on claims related to indoor air quality and furniture sustainability.  Opportunities for cross-training with other ECS programs are also expected for this position.

As Program Associate you will be responsible for working with clients in a variety of ways: auditing manufacturing processes and supply chains; evaluating product emission laboratory results; writing summary reports of assessment findings; providing technical assistance on certification standards and programmatic requirements; and offering some administrative support to the certification programs. The position offers a wide range of learning opportunities as well as the opportunity for travel.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Certification assessment:  Performance of both on-site audits and desk reviews;
  • Project management: simultaneous coordination and completion of audits and assessments for both domestic and international clients;
  • Professional communication with peers, program clients, and consultants;
  • Assistance in the development of program documentation, project plans and timelines;
  • Quality control activities (e.g., report peer review, tracking and implementation of evolving program requirements, support for program quality improvement activities, etc.);
  • Organization and continued maintenance of data management systems;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Preference for a B.S. or B.A. degree in a quantitative field, with a strong preference for Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or Industrial Ecology. Further preference will be given to a Masters Degree or significant relevant work experience;
  • Experience in manufacturing auditing and/or Quality or Environmental Management Systems (e.g. ISO 9001 or ISO 14001);
  • Strong customer service and teamwork skills, with preference given for candidates with previous professional work experience;
  • Superlative organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize numerous tasks effectively;
  • High attention to detail;
  • Initiative, good judgment, and ability to work independently under pressure in a changing environment;
  • Complete fluency in English and experience that involves professional written and verbal communication;
  • Ability to decipher complex Standards and provide clear and concise guidance to Clients;
  • Solid experience with computers, including programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, FileMaker, and data management;
  • An abiding interest in sustainability, green building, materials use, indoor air quality, and related environmental issues;
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, averaging 25%; and,
  • Must be willing to work regular business hours, 5 days per week in our Emeryville office.
