Position Overview:

RRS will hire an experienced Hazardous Waste Program Manager to work on location at a hospital in Southeast Michigan to develop, implement, monitor and manage a comprehensive hazardous waste management program that complies with all regulatory and accreditation requirements while working to reduce the environmental impact of the hospital through pollution prevention and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Visiting and assessing key work areas daily (regulated medical waste processing areas, satellite accumulation areas, hazardous waste storage unit, recycling and waste collection and dock equipment areas);
  • Identifying, handling, tracking, monitoring and auditing waste and recycling streams;
  • Performing data entry and auditing vendor invoices;
  • Manage routine waste collections by hospital staff and vendors;
  • Procuring and coordinating waste and recycling management services with vendors;
  • Assisting with obtaining and maintaining all required permits, licenses, shipping paperwork and documentation for waste generation, characterization, handling and disposal;
  • Overseeing daily and weekly waste area operations and equipment maintenance checklists;
  • Assisting with creating, organizing, scheduling, and leading educational outreach and training regarding waste segregation, management, recycling, and waste minimization;
  • Develop a waste minimization plan for the management of hazardous materials and use the model to implement process improvements to reduce risk exposure
  • Develop, implement and coordinate the management of the hazardous waste collection program (including the management of OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets and facilitating interaction between regulatory agencies)
  • Assisting RRS principals and staff with general office tasks and business development as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Organized, self-motivated, ability to set work priorities and complete work with minimal supervision;
  • Creative problem analysis abilities to solve client multi-dimensional problems and projects;
  • Open to and understanding of cultural and professional diversity;
  • Knowledge of hazardous, regulated medical, solid waste and recycling waste streams;
  • Experience with federal, state, and local regulations including but not limited to; EPA, DOT, OSHA, DEQ;
  • Professional certification as a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) is desired or Hazardous Materials Manager-in-Training (HMMT) required;
  • Current certification of hazardous materials and emergency response training under OSHA (29 CFR 1910.120) is preferred.
  • Comfort with hospital setting and regular safe contact with variety of waste types, including regulated medical waste, universal waste, and hazardous waste;
  • Knowledge about day-to-day facility operations and management (hospital experience a plus);
  • Willing to work in Detroit office at least 4 days per week, Ann Arbor office up to 1 day per week.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Required: 4 year college degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health Sciences, Industrial Hygiene or a related field. 5 years relevant experience working within a resource management, environmental health & safety or hazardous waste management program.
  • Preferred: 4 year college degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health Sciences, Industrial Hygiene or a related field. 10 years relevant experience working within a resource management, environmental health & safety or hazardous materials management program, and/or post-graduate training in any of the forgoing fields.
  • Past experience in consulting desirable.

Compensation: Dependent on experience and qualifications.
