Description

Help us Fight Proposition 23 and Protect California's Green Economy!

Position Overview:

USGBC-NCC seeks an intern to defend California's green legislation and economy by campaigning against Proposition 23. The intern will call USGBC Member companies and individuals and ask them to sign onto the No on Proposition 23 coalition and to vote no on Proposition 23 in the upcoming elections on November 2nd, 2010.

About Proposition 23 & Assembly Bill 32

The upcoming November California ballot proposition, known by opponents as the "Dirty Energy Proposition," would kill Assembly Bill (AB) 32, California's landmark environmental legislation. According to the Secretary of State, more than 98 percent of the funds for Proposition 23 are from oil companies and 89 percent of the funding is coming from out of state. The primary funders are two Texas oil companies, Valero Energy Corporation and Tesoro, who are among the nation's biggest polluters, with oil refineries that rank in the top ten polluters in California.

Prop. 23 supporters have put out a study indicating that AB 32 will harm the economy and lead to job loss. Stanford, UCLA, and Tufts have dismissed the research as "highly biased" and "deeply flawed." AB 32 has launched California to the forefront of the clean technology industry. Green jobs are expanding all over the state with the Bay Area experiencing 51% green jobs growth between 1995 and 2008.

Qualifications:

This position is ideal for an individual who has outstanding written and verbal communication and who shares USGBC's sustainability mission and values. Knowledge of California's green economy, green building, climate legislation (e.g. AB 32) and Proposition 23 and is desirable.

Compensation:

Benefits of interning with the USGBC-NCC include:

  • Interact with leading green building professionals and companies
  • Gain lobbying experience and build your resume at a high-profile, leading environmental organization
  • Help defend California's green economy against out-of-state oil companies
  • Attend USGBC-NCC monthly events and workshops free of charge during the internship

This is an unpaid internship, starting as soon as possible, until the election on November 2nd, 2010. Hours are flexible between 9am-5pm, based on availability, but we are especially seeking a full-time intern. This is not a feeder position to full-time employment at USGBC-NCC. Offices are located in the Financial District of San Francisco.
