Description

Urban Green Council, the New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization working to advance sustainability in the urban built environment, has an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who is interested in making a meaningful contribution to the growing green building movement.

High-rise residential buildings account for about 1/3 of citywide greenhouse gas emissions.  Unlike the commercial sector, decision-making in these buildings is highly decentralized, often at a building-by-building level by coop boards. In order to effect substantial change in these buildings, it is necessary to reach these buildings directly.

Position Overview:

The Residential Outreach Fellow will manage development of a presentation for boards of cooperative apartment buildings to inform them about opportunities for retrofits and to improve building operations. Once the presentation is complete, Urban Green Council volunteers will be recruited to deliver it to coop boards across the city.

The deliverables for this project, aimed for completion by the end of 2010, consist of a powerpoint presentation with instructor notes and related material on the Urban Green Council web site. Senior staff at Urban Green Council will provide a storyboard and content for the powerpoint, with the Fellow responsible for producing the materials based on this input.  Candidates should have the ability to multitask and to work independently with flexibility, enthusiasm and good humor.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop powerpoint presentation, including graphics and layout, using Urban Green Council template based on storyboard and content provided by senior Urban Green Council staff.
  • Research issues, as needed, related to the presentation.
  • If necessary, assist in identifying additional intern assistance for graphical illustrations or animations

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree obtained or in progress (candidates in their last 2 years of study will be considered); environmental or building-related field of study preferred
  • Strong interest in and understanding of green building and environmental issues
  • Detail-oriented, able to handle multiple tasks and to work independently
  • Familiarity with PowerPoint
  • Strong organizational skills

Additional Skills (optional but preferred):

  • Experience working with Illustrator and InDesign and ability to supply your own software

Compensation: This part-time unpaid internship will begin in September and last through mid-December 2010.
