Plug In America is the nation's leading advocacy group working towards the widespread adoption of plug-in electric vehicles. We accelerate the shift to plug-in vehicles powered by clean, affordable, domestic electricity to reduce our nation's dependence on petroleum and improve the global environment.  

Position Overview: 

Plug In America seeks an editor/project manager for the 2011 edition of "Charged Up and Ready to Roll: the Definitive Guide to Plug-in Electric Vehicles," a unique consumer resource guide first published in January 2010 to great reviews.

We'll be hiring quickly for this part-time, four-month contract. Work will start a.s.a.p. and run roughly from August through December 2010. This is an annual publication, so position could turn into an annual contract.

The inaugural 2010 edition was 44 pages (including ads) printed in an 8.5"x11" format, including 36 pages with some editorial content. We estimate the 2011 edition will be 72 pages. See a description of the 2010 book here.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan content and print production with input from Plug In America board and staff
  • Collaborate with designer to refine plans for content and appearance
  • Assign articles to writers with assistance from Plug In America team
  • Follow up with writers to ensure delivery of acceptable content
  • Edit, copy edit, and occasionally rewrite content with help from Plug In America team
  • Obtain artwork, graphics, illustrations, and photographs with help from Plug In America team
  • Manage work flow of articles through the layout process and print production, hitting deadlines
  • Create Table of Contents and other ancillary editorial content
  • Work with advertising, editorial and production teams to resolve all outstanding issues
  • Ensure that quality copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking of text is completed
  • Update schedules weekly, marking tasks complete and updating project status as needed.
  • Provide twice-monthly project status reports

Candidates in San Francisco Bay Area are preferred, but other locations will be considered. Editor can work in Plug In America's San Francisco office or remotely.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a developmental editor/project manager of a similar periodical or book
  • Some knowledge of the plug-in electric vehicle industry
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, to follow directions, and to work with a team
  • Proven organizational skills
  • Positive attitude and grace under pressure
  • Thorough knowledge of the Associated Press style book
