Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) is the information and networking center for citizens and environmental organizations concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste, radiation, and sustainable energy issues.
NIRS is a small, non-profit, extremely active, national information and networking clearinghouse for the grassroots movement for a nuclear-free, carbon-free energy future.
Position Overview:
NIRS is seeking an administrative coordinator/office manager/activist to perform organization's bookkeeping on computerized accounting system and to manage, update and operate a variety of databases.
Responsibilities:
- Perform organization's bookkeeping on computerized accounting system (Peachtree software). This includes accounts receivable and payable, bank reconciliation, recording payroll, etc. Prepare weekly financial summaries, monthly income and expense reports. File monthly, quarterly and annual payroll tax returns. Prepare books for annual audit, serve as liaison to accounting firm during audit.
- Manage, update and operate a variety of databases (primarily Giftmaker Pro), including membership, subscription and activists. Record all membership renewal info; prepare and process computerized addressing for monthly newsletter and mailings.
- Answer telephone, direct calls, assist with basic telephone information requests.
- Maintain office supplies and oversee proper usage and maintenance of office equipment.
- Administer volunteer and/or internship program.
- Assist with general office work, such as filing and mailings.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Depending on interests and ability, opportunities exist to serve as NIRS' liaison to particular activist groups; to engage in fundraising; to stage public events; to use artistic/writing skills; maintain NIRS' presence on social networking sites, etc.
Qualifications:
- Experience with computerized bookkeeping and Peachtree accounting software. Confidence as full-charge bookkeeper.
- Experience and understanding of computers and databases.
- Good verbal, organizational and writing skills.
- Commitment to grassroots environmental movement, interest in nuclear power, radioactive waste and other energy issues. Activist background a plus.
Compensation: Starting salary is $32,000; we try to provide modest annual raises. NIRS provides 3 weeks paid vacation; in addition, the office is normally closed between Christmas and New Year's. NIRS pays 100% of health insurance premiums. The office atmosphere is casual and congenial.
