Position Overview: 

This position will coordinate the Refuge's environmental education and volunteer program.  The incumbent will provide the leadership to fully implement the environmental educaiton and volunteer program. 

Responsibilities: 

Intern activities will include building the programs capacity by:

  1. Scheduling and accompanying school field trips and other groups at the Refuge
  2. Conducting outreach to teachers and educators
  3. Scheduling and conducting teacher workshops
  4. Completing the formal Refuge Environmental Education Field Guide
  5. Assist and support the volunteer program
  6. Assist and support the Friends of Willamette Valley NWR Complex
  7. Conduct outreach to the community

Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least 18 and under 25 years of age at time of hire.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen
  3. Valid driver's license for operating vehicles during work hours
  4. Desire to work with people to promote public education, environmental awareness and stewardship.
  5. Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills in a cooperative manner and the ability to work as a team.
  6. Ability to communicate and interact with people in a positive and professional manner at all times, including diverse staff, colleagues, partners, community members and the general public.
  7. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some evenings.
  8. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  9. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
  10. Regular and reliable attendance.

Length of Service: Service will begin on October 1, 2010 and end on August 31, 2011.  Incumbent will work approximately 40 hours/week. 

Incumbent must complete a 1,920 hour internship of which at least 1,536 hours are focused on Refuge related projects, 192 hours are focused on serving the Friends group, and 192 hours are focused on individual development.

Compensation: This position is compensated with a $1,000/month stipend for 11 months.  A completion award of $5,000 will be granted after successfully fulfilling the terms of the internship.  A successful completion includes completing the 1,920 hour requirement during the 11 month term while maintaining a satisfactory level of performance.

Transportation is provided for work-related business.  Housing is available.  All supplies and resources needed for project-related activities will be provided, including office space, computer, and work phone.
