B Lab, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, is helping to build a new sector of the global economy that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Lab certifies and supports B Corporations, a new kind of company that meets comprehensive, comparable, and transparent standards for social impact and that considers the interests of stakeholders, not just shareholders.
B Lab is also developing a social capital markets infrastructure, performance standards for social and environmental impact, and enabling public policy solutions. Since launching in June of 2007, B Lab has certified 250 B Corporations in the United States and Canada, representing 31 industries, over $1 billion in collective revenues, and $7 billion in assets under management.
B Lab is led by 3 co-founders: Jay Coen Gilbert, Bart Houlahan, and Andrew Kassoy. All 3 are highly successful entrepreneurs and investors who left 15-year private sector careers to create B Lab.
Position Overview:
The Director of Development, as a member of B Lab's senior leadership team, will be responsible for working with the 3 co-founders and the B Lab Board of Directors to access philanthropic gifts and patient capital investments to fund B Lab's core operations, standards development, policy work, capital markets infrastructure, and other special projects.
To date, B Lab has raised over $4 million in philanthropic support, with significant funding from both foundation and high net worth supporters, as well as from B Lab's co-founders. The Director of Development will be responsible for raising an additional $7 million over the next 3-4 years, as well as significant resources over the longer term.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Development will develop and implement B Lab's fundraising strategy, which is expected to include a focus on the following 3 areas:
- Foundations: Research to identify foundations that could support B Lab's core operations, the ongoing development of the Impact Ratings System and numerous impact or industry specific standards projects, policy strategy and implementation, media and education work, and capital markets infrastructure. Grant writing and presentations to these foundations to secure funding.
- Individual High Net Worth Donors: Completing build-out of B Lab's National Leadership Council of 20-30 highly engaged, large donors. Identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and maintenance of a national donor network, as well as donors on a regional/city basis and in specific industries with high interest in B Lab's work. This would also include cultivating development ambassadors amongst existing B Corporations, donors, and thought leaders. Creation of a formal giving program with recognized levels of giving.
- Aggregate Viral Marketing and Small Donors: Develop a marketing strategy for low-touch, small donors (consumers, employees, membership associations, magazine subscribers). Develop an annual giving campaign and multiple programs for giving (online, matching gifts, endowment, etc.).
Other key responsibilities include:
- Donor Reporting: Manage and coordinate other B Lab staff to produce appropriate grant reporting for foundation grants. Work with Marketing team to develop B Lab Annual Report for all key donors/investors.
- Collateral Materials: Work with B Lab's Marketing and PR firms to create development materials that showcase all aspects of B Lab's core and project-related work.
- Management: Work with the 3 Co-Founders to build B Lab's development capacity and culture and to create events and materials that showcase B Lab's work
Qualifications:
- B.A., with a graduate degree preferred. 10 years of overall professional experience in either a nonprofit development function (with a strong track record of individual, corporate, foundation, and government grant experience) or in the private sector (building a successful wealth management business).
- The Director of Development will have an impressive track record of having deepened relationships with existing clients while also researching and personally closing new relationships that have elevated the nonprofit/business to breakthrough results.
- Excellent and persuasive communicator, both written and spoken. Active listener.
- Ability to develop high quality, poignant communications materials.
- Ability to influence and engage-both independently and with the co-founders and Board Members-a wide range of high net worth individual donors, foundations and corporate partners.
- Passion for B Lab's mission; ability to translate that passion into a compelling personal and team-wide quest to achieve the organization's fundraising, programmatic and social impact goals.
- Energetic, flexible, collaborative and adaptable style; a leader who leads by example, and who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives by working with diverse stakeholders inside and outside B Lab.
- Stature to work with and quickly gain credibility with highly visible civic and business leaders.
Compensation: $100,000-$150,000 plus benefits depending on experience.
Location: New York or Philadelphia preferred, with some flexibility for other locations
