SCS recognizes well-managed fisheries and seafood suppliers that conform to the international sustainability standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). SCS was the first certifier to become accredited by MSC in 2000 and has since certified more than 2 million metric tons of seafood. SCS is accredited to perform both Fisheries and Chain of Custody assessments and does so under the auspices of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) as well as the accreditation oversight of Accreditation Services International.

MSC is an independent, non-profit initiative, designed to recognize and reward sustainable fishing practices and to assist the marketing of seafood products from those responsibly-managed fisheries through use of the MSC eco-label. MSC certified sustainable fisheries are those that maintain healthy populations of targeted species, protect the integrity of ecosystems, and well managed and balance biological, social and commercial interests.

Position Overview:

The Program Associate of SCS's Sustainable Seafood program will report to the program manager and will be responsible of assembling, scheduling and contribution to the certification teams assessing fisheries operations to the MSC standards. Fisheries certification projects are conducted around the world and therefore the position requires domestic and international travel between 20-30% of time.

Responsibilities:

  • Working in teams of up to 5 professionals assessing fisheries management operations throughout the world to the MSC standards
  • Assembling, training and scheduling certification teams for Fisheries certification
  • Track MSC developments; contribute to MSC accreditation through Accreditation Services International (ASI)

Qualifications:

  • University or post-graduate degree in fisheries biology with background in fisheries stock assessment or fisheries management
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in fisheries science
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural situation and with a wide range of people with diverse economic, political and professional backgrounds in both public and private sectors
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as in a team
  • Ability to communicate well with fisheries clients and to establish and maintain effective relationships
  • Computer skills-proficiency in Microsoft word and excel required
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Japanese a plus
