Description
Based out of the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center in North Cascades National Park (Diablo, Washington), the Curriculum Coordinator works with the Program Coordinator to oversee the development and delivery of curriculum/program content for ELC programs including Mountain School, the Institute's flagship program for elementary through high school students, Adult Programs, Family Getaways and other Institute programs.
Position Overview:
The Curriculum Coordinator is primarily responsible for curriculum development and instruction, instructor training, evaluation, and collaboration with the Program Coordinator to administer programs effectively and efficiently. In addition, this position works closely with interpretive staff of North Cascades National Park, and other Institute educational partners. This position also provides instructional support for NCI programs as necessary.
Supervised by the Program Director, this is a full-time, exempt position with occasional responsibility for overnight supervision of the Learning Center campus. This position has the responsibility to apply good judgment and discretion, particularly with the welfare and safety of all program participants.
Responsibilities:
- Work with program team to develop, implement and evaluate environmental education curriculum for on-site programs (Mountain School, adult programs, family getaways, etc.).
- Be the lead on developing trainings for program instructors (staff and graduate students) in collaboration with the program team.
- Evaluate teaching staff, including graduate students, interns, volunteers and paid seasonal staff.
- Manage Mountain School in collaboration with Program Coordinator.
- Assist in management of other ELC programs in collaboration with the program team.
- Instruct lessons in natural and cultural history, science, the arts, recreational activities and other subjects in support of Mountain School and other NCI programs as required.
- Develop curriculum for and present pre- and post-trip visits to schools.
- Serve as on-campus, overnight supervisor during Mountain School and other Learning Center programs as assigned.
- Develop teacher workshops and trainings in support of Mountain School.
- Assist in maintaining partnerships and relationships with schools, federal agencies and non-governmental organizations.
- Represent the Institute at conferences, festivals and community events as needed.
- Assist with tracking program expenses and developing annual program budget.
- Assist Program Coordinator with record keeping and paperwork.
- Assist in all facets of Learning Center programs and operations (e.g., maintenance, host) as needed.
- Participate in Institute's program, risk management and Learning Center teams as needed.
- Participate in strategic planning, inter-office communications and other duties as assigned by the Program Director, Operations Director and/or Executive Director.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Environmental Education, Education, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology or related field
- Enthusiasm for learning and teaching about the natural world
- Experience developing curriculum for school programs and course content for all audiences in an environmental education setting
- Experience training seasonal staff
- Residential environmental education experience a plus
- Must be creative, energetic, flexible, motivated and professional
- Must possess a sense of humor and enjoy working as a cooperative team player
- Must be willing to work full days and evenings; weekend work will be required
- Ability to work and live comfortably in a small community
- Ability to hike over varied elevation and terrain for extended periods
- Current Wilderness First Responder certification required
- A criminal history and background check
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
Compensation: This is a full-time, exempt position. We offer a competitive compensation package; benefits include paid time-off, medical/dental insurance and tax-defined annuity and contribution retirement plans.
Housing may be available on or near campus; pets and smoking are not allowed in housing or at the Learning Center. The Learning Center is located approximately 20 miles from the nearest gas station and post office, 60 miles from towns with full amenities.
