The Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District (GCSWCD), in conjunction with local municipalities in the NYC Watershed of Greene County, is implementing a number of community-based initiatives that seek to engage local residents and municipal officials in watershed protection efforts and natural resource planning.
The Education and Outreach Program involves upgrading web-based and print material for use in educating the public and local officials, working with nine watershed municipalities and a wide range of agencies, non-profit organizations and private interests to implement education/outreach recommendations in adopted Stream Management Plans. Organizing workshops and building a website resource library that promote stewardship and protection in areas including stormwater practices, riparian buffer protection, highway and infrastructure, land use planning, and regulatory compliance is a priority for the Program.
Education and Outreach initiatives proactively address issues and concerns local communities, regulatory agencies, landowners and watershed managers have with respect to preserving water quality in the NYC upstate water supply, specifically the Schoharie Watershed. The host site is located in the northeast Catskill Mountains.
Position Overview:
The Student Conservation Association intern will assist the Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District with locally driven education and outreach projects that support local watershed communities in the NYC Watershed. Specific tasks include creation of educational material (newsletters, public service announcements, brochures), revamping the agency website, and assistance with outreach efforts to engage multiple stakeholders in the Greene County portion of the NYC Watershed.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, and design skills to assist with scheduling focus group training workshops, organizing and supporting larger public forums (summits, tours), targeting outreach to local officials based on previously identified training needs, developing and maintaining website, and creating print publications for dissemination. Additional learning opportunities may be available as time and funding allow and include assisting in the development and implementation of a streamside riparian program and working with agency partners to implement stream corridor protection and restoration recommendations.
Qualifications:
Enrollment in, or graduate of a BA/BS/MS program in Natural Resource or Community Planning, Environmental Science, Watershed Management, Environmental Education, or related field. Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills including effective writing and outreach to broad constituency. Proficiency with MS Office, website design, and publications. Familiarity with GIS preferred.

Job Location:
Based in Tannersville, NY with field work throughout the Schoharie Watershed in the Northeast Catskill Mountains
Compensation: $1005 per month plus an AmeriCorps education award at end of term ($4750)
Work Hrs: Monday through Friday, 40 hours. Evening hours may be required.
