Since 1941, the Grand Traverse Conservation District has served as a knowledge base for the natural resource needs of the local community. A critical, action-oriented organization, the GTCD has responded to current environmental issues with the manpower, educational and technical tools necessary to keep our forests healthy, water clean, and parklands vibrant. The District also provides exciting nature education programs for children and families.

Position Overview: 

The Grand Traverse Conservation District (GTCD) seeks an Program Coordinator for the new Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative. The successful candidate will have the background, skills and personality to coordinate professional development for teachers, school-community partnerships and place-based education projects through the GTCD's Boardman River Nature Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and implements professional development programs for K-12 teachers.
  • Facilitates partnerships between schools and natural resource community partners.
  • Coordinates place-based education projects involving teachers, students and community partners.
  • Oversees development and maintenance of project website and online communication tools.
  • Develops and maintains a positive, welcoming and cooperative relationship with Nature Center users, partners and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, education or other field related to the mission of the Grand Traverse Conservation District.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant professional experience, including educational program development.
  • Proven experience in project team management involving both internal and external partners.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in biological sciences, education or other field related to the mission of the Grand Traverse Conservation District.
  • Experience in research or education related to the Great Lakes or other water resources.
  • Experience in developing professional development programs for teachers.
  • Experience in teaching through inquiry and place-based education.
  • Michigan Teaching Certification

Abilities:

  • Computer literacy including working knowledge of Windows platform and software, especially the Microsoft Office package.
  • Exceptional organizational and management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Ability to engage and teach audiences of all ages, including teachers and volunteers.
  • Ability to develop initiatives and follow through to implementation, evaluation and improvement.
  • Excellent social and interpersonal skills and ability to relate positively with people of different ages and abilities.
  • Current certification, or willingness to become certified in CPR and basic first aid.
  • Maintains a valid driver's license.

Compensation: $17.00 to $21.00 per hour. Benefits include health insurance coverage for employee, 10 paid holidays, 13 vacation days and up to 13 paid sick days per year. The GLSI Program Coordinator Position is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position.
