Founded, in 1986, San Juan Citizens Alliance is a grassroots organization dedicated to social, economic and environmental justice. We organize San Juan Basin residents to protect our water and air, our public lands, our rural character, and our unique quality of life while embracing the diversity of our region's people, economy and ecology.

SJCA's strategic plan focuses on 5 major campaign areas through 2011: Challenge Irresponsible Energy Development, Safeguard Free-Flowing Rivers & Clean Water, Protect Spectacular Lands and Native Wildlife of the Wild San Juans, Act Locally on Global Warming, and Build a Safe and Hospitable Society. 

Position Overview: 

San Juan Citizens Alliance seeks an Executive Director with strong management and administration skills, a commitment to and excellence in fundraising, and overarching strategic vision. The Executive Director provides the campaign oversight for SJCA's varied conservation, environmental, and social justice agenda in the San Juan Basin.

The Executive Director provides the vision and guidance to advance all aspects of the organization. The Executive Director must have strong management and administration skills, must have a commitment to and excellence in fundraising with a specific focus on foundation proposals, and must have strong personnel management skills.

A major role for the Executive Director is providing the strategic vision and campaign oversight for our varied conservation, environmental, and social justice agenda. The ideal candidate will have broad experience in energy, public lands and water issues affecting the Rocky Mountains and Colorado Plateau, and be knowledgeable about administrative, legislative and legal avenues to advance conservation and social justice campaigns.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with staff team to devise appropriate campaign strategies and oversees their implementation for SJCA's conservation priorities.
  • Provides direct supervision to SJCA's campaign and program staff, develops annual workplans to implement campaigns and sets measurable benchmarks for success.
  • Prepares annual organizational budget and annual fundraising plan.
  • Prepares foundation grant proposals, and researches new foundation supporters.
  • Oversees implementation of major donor program in concert with SJCA's administrative assistant, including identifying and cultivating major donor prospects and soliciting major gift donations.
  • Oversees SJCA's communication strategies, including print, website, and online.
  • Represents SJCA within the community and within coalitions.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience with conservation issues and geography of the San Juan Basin, including energy development, public lands management, wilderness, and water issues.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, schedule, and prioritize tasks. Must be comfortable with multi-tasking and managing detailed projects with overlapping deadlines.
  • Experience managing staff with diverse talents and backgrounds.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Proven track record of fundraising success, including foundation solicitations, major donor campaigns, or other relevant fundraising experience.
  • Experience working with news media, including developing strategic messaging and media plans.
  • 5+ years minimum experience in conservation, non-profit management or related experience.

Compensation: Salary: up to $50,000. Benefits package includes group health insurance plan, Simple IRA, generous vacation package, sick leave and holidays, and occasional whitewater/powder day.
