Description
The Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School (JGEMS), in Salem, Oregon, is an Oregon charter school whose focus is to increase awareness of environmental issues and concepts to middle school students. Our total enrollment is 90 students, 30 students in each of the middle school grades (6th, 7th, and 8th).
JGEMS partners with many organizations like the Jane Goodall Institute, U.S. Forest Service, Smithsonian Institution, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Oregon Zoo, among others, to provide the students with the best resources and expertise as they take their learning from the classroom into the field.
Position Overview:
Our capstone experience for the 8th graders is to conduct year-long research projects. Data is collected in the field, analyzed, conclusions are drawn, and the results are ultimately presented to a group of scientific professionals. Each year, JGEMS hires an AmeriCorps Scientist whose primary responsibility is to help oversee the various field projects and facilitate the integration of these projects into the regular school curriculum.
