Ze-gen, Inc. is a Boston-based, privately held company providing advanced gasification technology to convert industrial and municipal waste streams into synthesis gas and low emissions thermal energy. Ze-gen has an initial commercial focus on gasification of construction & demolition debris, and has been proving the efficacy of waste gasification at our large-scale demonstration facility since September 2007.

The company is backed by top-tier venture capital firms both in Boston and San Francisco. Ze-gen is aggressively expanding its engineering team as we move into the design, financing and construction of full-scale commercial waste gasification facilities beginning in 2010.

Position Overview:

The Intermediate Process Engineer will be a key player on Ze-gen's Liquid Metal Gasification (LMG) Process technology development team and will be expected to make significant contributions to the overall technical direction of the Company. The individual will play a key role in continuing to develop the LMG Process with a clear and urgent market opportunity, and will report directly to Ze-gen's Vice President of Technology.

The Intermediate Process Engineer will work within a brilliant core group of engineers to optimize Ze-gen's waste gasification technology and processes, with a variety of feed stocks and applications. The individual will also be exceptionally motivated to deliver the Ze-gen LMG Process on-time, following work processes, implementing technical direction, and becoming part of a core process team while working with exceptional external specialized resources.  More specifically, the individual will have demonstrated experience and or interest in related process technology analysis.  Please see the Intermediate Engineering Responsibility Matrix below.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all aspects of the engineering and development of our first commercial plant LMG Process and all subsequent facilities. This includes liaison with Engineering partners and interfacing with all outside resources in material preparation, gasification, gas clean-up, combustion, and conversion to liquid fuels.
  • Participate in the ongoing development processes to ensure a successful demonstration of Ze-gen's technology. Performance should be predictable, reliable and on-time.
  • Support on a day to day basis, Ze-gen's Technology Team (being assembled), with expertise across gasification, metallurgy, combustion, gas cleanup, and other related areas.
  • Personal Accountability and full participation as a member of the company's technical resource team.
  • Participate in setting technical requirements and direction for new products in conjunction with Ze-gen's Project Engineering and Market Development groups.
  • Work closely with Ze-gen's Plant Operations group to develop procedures and safety standards to commission facilities, hand-off ongoing operations, and support continuous improvement to technology and operating processes.

Qualifications:

  • BS or related degree required, MS preferred with emphasis on chemical or combustion
  • 3-8+ years experience in chemical engineering process including supervision of process modeling associated with high temperature chemical process
  • Recent Engineering experience in a gasification or process company
  • Ideal Industry Experience or academic thesis: process engineering firm, petro-chemical, coal, or waste gasification, chemical processing
  • Career goals that includes more senior process engineering roles at a specialized process company
  • Ideal experience also includes process engineering of gasification related facilities including new technologies
  • Career progression from accomplished academic to working experience.

Provides hands-on, day-to-day involvement in the business, without "guarding knowledge or data". Implements key initiatives and areas of focus, maintains a work process to effectively cascade planning and commitment throughout the organization.
  • Intelligence. Superior academic record within process engineering on-time. Plans work processes for deliverables and interfaces with the groups plans while minimizing process loss and planning time
  • Chemical Engineering. Experience working with project engineering departments and analytical groups and has a reputation as a valued and accurate team player. Regularly communicates directly, openly, and honestly, even on "tough" issues. Works collaboratively. Inspires confidence in a high-powered engineering team.
  • Team Development. Participates as a cohesive process team member focused on a common set of goals. Identifies organizational needs, mentors junior talent and optimizes/leverages resources. Works within a team to maintain comprehensive process technology development plans and achieve commitment to those plans. Must be an effective communicator and writer.
  • Technical Depth. Displays both breadth and depth of technical knowledge in related chemical engineering. Perceived as adding technology value to the company, as well as being a credible technology spokesperson among external constituents, customers, engineering and partners, regulators, and technology partners.
  • Technology Awareness, Curiosity and Open-mindedness. Should be familiar with the latest technical developments in the renewable energy, gasification, gas clean-up, emissions and waste disposal space. Grounds all technical work in scientific reality. Must be responsive to Ze-gen defined technology and customer requirements and feedback, and understand the technical issues associated with delivering Ze-gen's LMG process technology to market. Must be willing to adapt process strategies in the face of compelling technical or commercial reasons to do so.
