Position Overview:

The Manager position will involve project management and stewardship of grant-funded initiatives that relate directly to building the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR). BSR works closely with the U.S. Department of State and bilateral agencies, as well as private foundations, including the Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Packard Foundation, the Levi Strauss Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, on projects related to improving the lives of workers along global supply chains.

Topical issues of grant-funded work at BSR vary, but examples include international labor migration, China's rising influence in Africa, women's general and reproductive health along supply chains, and environmental health and labor relations in China. BSR currently manages grant-funded work in China, India, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam; we anticipate expanding this work into Europe and the Middle East/North Africa in the near future.

The Manager will coordinate with senior staff at BSR to manage daily operations of assigned projects, including outreach to project partners in multiple countries around the world. Broadly, this will involve ensuring that BSR is tracking project progress to the short- and long-term goals identified in original project proposals. More specifically, it will involve daily interaction with global project partners across multiple time zones, contract negotiation, and interaction with BSR member companies. This position is full-time and will be based in San Francisco, but can be based in New York.

Responsibilities:

Grants and Contracts: The Manager, under the guidance of the Director of Grants, will support efforts to develop and manage grant-related work related to CSR. BSR carries out significant foundation and government funded work to research and develop new tools, guides and methodologies that advance the field of CSR and improve the lives of workers in emerging economies.

Advisory Services: Though primarily focused on grant-funded project implementation, the Manager will also play a role in delivering consulting services to member and non-member companies. Areas of project focus include: corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance assessment and reporting, strategy development, social risk identification and management, community development program design, stakeholder engagement, sustainable development, environmental sustainability, and human rights.

Business Development and Recruitment: The Manager will work with BSR industry directors in identifying and developing new business opportunities with existing funders, target funders and member companies alike.

External Representation: The Manager will represent BSR to an external audience by: attending & presenting at industry conferences; writing occasional publications; forming beneficial external partnerships; and researching other opportunities to raise the profile of BSR more broadly.

Qualifications:

NOTE: Only candidates with these specific requirements will be considered:

- Bachelor's degree;
- Significant experience (at least 5 years) in CSR, preferably with an emphasis on supply chain issues OR experience working with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and/or for-profit development organizations on partnership development and implementation with companies. The ideal candidate would offer a combination of field experience and corporate-level experience interacting with multinational company personnel;
- Consulting experience and/or proven ability to perform the key functions of a consultant, including: developing and maintaining client relationships; pursuing business opportunities; and managing multiple projects under tight deadlines;
- Preferred Language Skills: Fluent in English, with an additional language from a region in which BSR is based a strong advantage;
- Solid leadership and people skills, including a demonstrated ability to enhance the skills and effectiveness of other team members;
- Excellent verbal, written, and facilitation skills;
- Willingness to undertake business travel (~ 30-45% time);
- Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, fast-paced entrepreneurial organization with a collaborative environment;
- High ethical standards and commitment to BSR core values of Leadership, Respect and Integrity.
