Food & Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer rights organization that challenges the corporate control and abuse of our food supply and water resources.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a talented writer and editor to manage our website and create timely and engaging content to inspire readers to take action on important issues.
The Web Associate works with the program staff to ensure that the website meets campaign goals, that priority campaigns are effectively represented on our website, and that content is timely and relevant. This person is a member of our communications staff, reports to the Internet Strategist, and works closely with our policy and organizing staff to communicate our issues to diverse audiences using the Internet.
Responsibilities:
- Write and edit action-oriented website content.
- Direct website editorial calendar to ensure that our priority campaigns are covered sufficiently and regularly.
- Coordinate website coverage of both online and offline campaign activities.
- Update Food & Water Watch front page and blog daily and update content for priority campaigns at least weekly.
- Manage and regularly contribute to the Food & Water Watch blog.
- Continually evaluate existing website content for effectiveness.
- Adapt new and existing written materials, including factsheets, reports, and news items, for web use.
- Edit, develop, or expand site content in response to trends in website traffic.
- Post new website content and oversee posting done by other staff for quality control.
- Ensure website accuracy, including copy editing and proofreading of content.
- Assist in new developments to our website and new use of technologies such as video blogging, social networking sites, or the next big idea.
- Manage web developers and technical contractors.
Qualifications:
• Experience: At least one year of professional experience in writing, communications, or journalism or experience field organizing on issue campaigns with a strong alternative media component. Experience in public interest campaign work and advocacy communications highly desired. Experience with content management system user interfaces, especially Plone, helpful.
• Education: College degree or equivalent experience required.
• Knowledge: Facility with computer and Web technologies, such as HTML, content management systems, content feeds, social networking and social book-marking sites, and search engines as well as web design and photo editing software.
• Skills: Ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple and compelling manner and to get up to speed quickly multiple and changing policy issues. Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal skills are required.
• Capabilities: Ability to work well with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis. Curiosity about new technologies and a willingness to learn new skills essential. Attention to detail essential.
• Conditions: Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of Food & Water Watch. Long hours possible.
