The Environmental League of Massachusetts is an independent, member-based, nonprofit organization with the mission of protecting air, water, land, and environmental health for the people of the Commonwealth. ELM dedicates itself to bringing about better environmental outcomes for the state. ELM is one of the oldest environmental advocacy organizations in the country, tracing its history back to the late 19th century. It is the only organization that works exclusively in Massachusetts for strong environmental policies.

The four major components of ELM's programmatic work are Policy Development; Advocacy; Policy Oversight; and Citizen Education. 

ELM is well-known for its work to ensure continued, and enhanced, governmental support for existing programs and to garner the appropriate public, legislative and executive support for new initiatives. Every year, ELM produces the Green Budget and the State of the Environment Report. ELM has an annual budget of $500,000 and five full-time and one part-time staff people 

Essential functions of the President include: 

* Establishing, together with the board, the overall strategic direction of the organization, including identifying needs and opportunities, developing the policy analysis and advocacy agenda, evaluating the strategies and impact of the organization, and implementing fundraising strategies.
* Strengthening ELM's marketing and outreach to enhance the organization's reputation as the leading player in environmental advocacy in Massachusetts with a particular strength in coalition building.
* Broadening ELM's financial support base by attracting new donors and by increasing commitments from existing supporters.
* Continuing and growing the organization's relationship with state and regional foundations.
* Expanding ELM's policy portfolio to address the state's role in important regional and national issues such as climate change.
* Maintaining the organization's deep credibility and continuing its role as a strong and responsible voice for the environment.
* Continuing the growth, vibrancy and effectiveness of the Collaborative by both attracting new organizational members and enhancing the effectiveness of its collective political voice.
* Strengthening and enhancing the Board of Directors and helping to maximize its contributions to achieving ELM's mission. 

Attributes and Experience: 

* A deep understanding of legislative and public policy processes, preferably through direct experience in appointed or elective office, engagement in policy campaigns, or professional advocacy experience.
* Proven success in attracting, developing and retaining a talented, committed and diverse staff.
* A record of success in fundraising, including the ability both to elicit individual donations as well as nurturing and maintaining institutional relationships.
* Demonstrated ability to bring together diverse constituencies in support of innovative and sustainable public policies.
* The ability to carefully monitor and critically evaluate the implementation of policy initiatives.
* Experience in recruiting and productively using a diverse Board of Directors.
* Exceptional writing, communication and media skills.
* A Bachelor's degree is required. An advanced degree is highly desirable. 

Salary is commensurate with experience and equivalent to similar organizations.
